Apps for a Smartphone.

Funny story - I was searching Iphone apps for some sort of pulley/motor/rpm app and it came up with some sort of man-on-man pull-action app.  Not that there's anything wrong with that, but an interesting search result.

You'd need to find a touch-screen specific stylus, but you'd be loosing all of the benefits of the touchscreen: swiping, zooming, etc.

I already own a construction master calculator but rarely use it. i downloaded a simple Scientific calculator for my Android for use on site. As far as Construction/carpentry specific apps I don't really use any, there's the Baluster Pro app that just calculates slats and spaces for balusters or fence rungs but again I just use a regular calculator for that so no need to speend the extra dough. There's an app called "Cam Scanner" that allows you to snap a picture of a document, crop it and optimize it for viewing, great for when someone left their notes at the shop and you need to get them to them fast. Drop Box allows you to create a folder and share it with other computers instantly, great if you need to edit a document on your phone or another computer and have theose changes sow up everywhere it's shared instantly. There are various note taking applications but i've yet to find my fav. Also there's some free knot tying guides plus loads of free ebooks, PDF readers all that stuff. I also play Zelda through a snes emulator on my toilet breaks.

As far as rooting your android goes, I suggest you read up on rooting your specific device on the "XDA DEVELOPERS" website. there's more than likely a simple app that will do it for you you can download from there.

I have heard there is an app that allows you to connect a computer to the phone & get internet access on the computer. I have not found this one yet.

Chris, try http://tether.com/android/lp.  I use Tether with my 'Berry.  You already have a data plan for your Droid, so there's no point in paying yet again for the provider's tethering setup.  Tether is a one-time fee of $50.  Enjoy!

Is there a mywi app?  That's what I use on the iPhone...it's actually one of the only ones available for the iPhone.

It is going to be nice having that with me all of the time.

I have the Droid2, which is essentially the same phone. I use my phone, connected to my laptop daily, as I am right now making this post. Have been doing so for the last almost 4 months.

If you are a windows user, I would recommend pda_net. The free version works just fine, but once the trial period is over you will no longer be able to log into secure websites (https://). It has a nice feature, where if you receive a text message it will pop up on the screen of the pc/laptop so that you can remain on a single device and use a real keyboard.

pda_net does not, to the best of my knowledge work with Linux natively, but may work through an emulator such as wine.

If you are a Linux user like myself, then azilink is the way to go. It does not have the texting feature described above, but there is also no trial period to then lock you out of secure websites.

Neither of these apps require you to root your phone. Do make sure you have an unlimited data plan!

Both were installed in under 5 minutes (each).

Be forewarned, if your signal is poor, so too will be your internet. I have found that at 1 bar, my speed would make dial-up look like a blessing. When I have 5 bars, it is more like broadband/dsl (well maybe not that fast, but way fast enough for most things).

If you/anyone have/has a particular problem with either, give me a shout.

[edit] ps: If you are 3G, you cannot phone and data at the same time. once you hit send (answer) on your phone, you lose all bandwidth. Yes it will return once you hang up. You may need to restart the app(s) depending on the mood of the electron gods.

I may now look into getting a cheep netbook to keep in my work truck full time.

Chris, if you're planning on leaving a netbook (or laptop) in your truck, I'd recommend that you 1) do a full backup of your baseline setup (O/S, applications, data) using Acronis TrueImage Home 2011, 2) install TrueCrypt to totally encrypt your hard drive to protect your records and data, and 3) immediately make a backup disk of the TrueCrypt loader data and keep it nearby, but separate from your netbook/laptop.  It's scary the first time you do a whole-system encryption, but it works wonderfully and your data is totally protected.  Should you choose to use TrueCrypt, choose your passphrase well and do not forget it.  There are NO BACK DOORS or rescue techniques possible if you forget the passphrase.  Your only option is to reformat and restore using TrueImage.  Also, do a total backup every week, just to cover your assets.

This may be a little late but one thing you definitely need is an Otterbox case for the droid X. The phone seems kind of fragile without it and it protects it from dust and sawdust. I love mine.
