Hi all,
My latest project that I can write about here are a pair of American Ash canoe paddles, one for me and one for herself.
I used offcuts from a job making linings and screens and the Festools in my kit, (EHL65 planer, Kapex, Trion and OF2200)
P.U. glue and danish oil.

Hand tools used were spoke shaves, block plane and frosts utility knife.

They weigh just over a kilo each and took just 6hrs over several days to make. Never made any before and yet to be used due to canoe being lost in transit...gives me time for extra oiling ;D

Thank you CDM.  [smile]

Thankfully my other half loves hers, especially after I whittled the handle to suit her hands in the lounge [eek]  ;D

Tried to get a picture to show how thin they get blade end but pics are not clear enough. [sad]

Just finished another de-nib and re-coat of oil. [smile]

Those look great!
now you just have to make the canoe to go with them  [big grin]

what was the movie, someone made a beautiful wood canoe and was asked to cut it in half because the buyer wanted to hang it on a wall.

cheers,

- J

Ah yes! The canoe.... well that is another story..... the plan is to make a Cedar Strip one over the winter but we also needed one for our travels in the motorhome so we got this one ....

greg mann thanks  ;)

Rob, how long does it take to make an average canoe? My father always wanted one, it would
make an awesome gift. I imagine it's a pretty long project.

Nick Offerman (from Parks and Recreation TV show) says (at 5:15) it takes him about 2 1/2 - 3 months of full time work.
Here is on David Letterman talking about it.

He used Canoe Craft and Ted Moores' Bear Mountain Boat Shopweb site and plans

Here he is a tour of Offerman's shop from Fine Woodworking.

Thanks for posting those links Tim, I really enjoyed the video of Nick's shop tour! :)

Now I know it would take me more than a year to make a canoe  [unsure]

Good luck Rob! :)

From my research it takes on average 165 hours to build one, that is assuming you are just making to the basic plans and not putting added details into it. Also assumes that the builder is competent with power and hand tools.

I am basing my build on Ted Moores' book but am playing with some Festool related ideas too! Gil Gilpatrick's book is also great particularly his chapter on seats.
I will also finally get myself a Rotex  [eek] it is the one tool I keep promising myself then getting some work that requires investment elsewhere! There is a considerable amount of sanding involved in the build. A lot of which is of a very itchy nature so I can not continue with the B..ch or M...ta's lack of dust control, even my old Elu 3" belt sander connects to the Mini and works better for it.

Right gotta go wake herself so we can go a paddlin'...just hope we don't hear banjo's........................

You'll really appreciate the Rotex (150?). It's an awesome machine. I have never built a canoe but I am sure it will make the sanding go much quicker.
