In the market for a bench vise guy...any input on what you guys are using how and where its mounted? thanks!

Hello,

I use a pretty standard Record 4" Engineers vice and I bought some soft rubber clamp things to slip over the jaws when working with nicer material.  I don't use it very much but seems fine.

I mounted the vice on 3 x 12mm pieces of ply and I just clamp it down to my work surface when I need it.

What will you be using it for?  Mine is more multipurpose, not sure I'd use it for sanding or to cut dovetails as I can clamp material to the side of my work bench if I need to do that.

I use a Wilton 78A, pivot jaw woodworkers vise mounted on the end of a bench. I bought the wood jaw inserts for it.

Eventually I plan to embed T-track into the bench top to extend the range of the vise.

thanks fellas! its mostly used for clamping small pieces of alum/steel bar. i think a 4in jaw is plenty. just wanted to see what brands everyone is using nowadays as i never bought such a tool before.

For a woodworking vise, I have a Record at one corner.  And a Lee Valley chain twin handle vise going across the end of the bench.  Bench is about 2 feet by 7 feet.  The vises are for woodworking, not metal working.  Have a couple small metal vises for metal holding.

Vises are one of my vices...

Sears has a pretty good deal right now on a couple of Yost vises. Although you said you only needed a 4", here is a great deal on a 6" all steel vice that would likely be my choice if I were buying today:

Yost 906-AS - 6" All Steel Utility Workshop Vise $109.96 (about $30 cheaper than Amazon)

Edit: Found the 4" equivalent at $69.96 (about $18 cheaper than Amazon):

Review from Amazon:

Solid vise made in the USA!

One would not usually look at a vise as a precision tool but after trying a China import this one really trumps all others. It is precision machined in the areas that count. The jaws are well done and the screw is smooth as silk.

Thanks for your effort finding these, Wayne!

I need a good, medium/large-sized vise. I like what you found but what happened to the old anvil?

Maybe you can instruct me on that?

Thanks,

Tom

Define medium/large size vise? What width jaw size and what opening? Budget/quality? There are several good sales that end today, and I'll find you something.

Anvils can still be found, but aren't that common since not too many people do blacksmithing anymore. Some of us 'Renaissance Men'  - also defined as 'jack of all trades and master of none' - still own one and use it...

I have an ancient Zylex from way back when they were still Swiss made.  I understand they are now made in China and the quality is not so great anymore.  since i got the MFT's and a whole pile of clamping elements, I seldom use it.

Thanks,

Actually, I have an iron vice out in my barn that has nothing to do with my woodworking. That does get hammered on.
I have a Swedish workbench with two vices on it that i can not get to right now, >>>  Horizontal collection area  [unsure]
From the rest of the thread, i was considering vices that bolt or clamp to top of bench.
