I'm looking for the most accurate 14 to 18" square I can find to do some crucial alignments.  I'm sick of doing crucial alignments, not whether for sure, whether or not my square is accurate.  Please don't say Ed Bennet at TS-Tablesaw Alignment, because I've tried contacting him with no success.  Some have said he is no longer doing business, but they're only guessing.  If you have a way of contacting him, please let me know.
At any rate, Ed's 14" and 18" squares claim .0001" overall accuracy and that suits me fine.  Are there any other squares that are close to that?

I use Woodpecker Large Precision Squares in my shop. Never have had a problem contacting them.

The long side of my Woodpecker squares are 660mm which is 26 inches. Mine are calibrated in metric.

It is no secret that at a separate facility I own a sophisticated precision machine shop. The first of my Woodpecker 660mm squares was tested and shown to be far better than accurate to 0.001 inch.

Yeah...if they had a larger square, I could go for that.

The Woodpecker squares are advertised to be accurate to 0.001 to full length.

Not sure what you are working on, but that is pretty good for tuning wood working machines.

I'm also interested in this. Please update us if you find anything or convince Woodpeckers to do another run of those 26" squares.

Thanks for all the help.  I did something kinda crazy.  I went and bought an 18" Starrett 20-18 at a really great price, in great condition.  At the same time, I saw a 24" 20-24, also at a great price and condition, so I bought it as well.
Kinda crazy for me to get both, but I'm sure I'll use them.  Since I paid less than $750 for both, I feel I got a great deal.  Both are from reputable sellers and both accept returns if not 100% satisfied.  Also, interestingly, they both tested the squares in shop and found them to be well within .0001"/6" of length.  One even showed a video of the test procedure.  I thought that was pretty cool.
Anyways, I hope this will end my search for a great square.  Thanks again for all the help.  It's still too bad the Woodpecker 24" is no longer available and they didn't seem interested in doing another run anytime soon.  I'll report here when I get the squares in my hands.

Wood_Junkie, I PMd you...

Wood Junkie,
I'd like to talk to you about your Woodpecker Square.  Please PM me.  I PM'd you, but you may not have gotten it.  Thanks so much.

Darita, your choice in Starrett squares is an excellant one. I have more Starrett products than I can count. I have a piece of rubber shelf liner (perforated & non skid rubber) that I lay on my bench when using precision instruments. This has proven to be a life saver many times from the device landing on the floor. As you know, ground and polish surfaces such as your squares are really slippery when on a smooth workbench or ground surface of a table saw. It turn s out to be a bad day when your precision tools hit the floor. Rubber shelf liner is a good thing. Just my input.

Thanks.  i'll def keep that in mind.  I don't plan on using these very often, but when i do, i don't want to handle them with all the care I can.

Just wanted to respond to the more-than-a-few people who PM'd about buying the WP 26" square I offered up here to darita, rather than replying to numerous PMs.

It was only right to give him first right of refusal, and he has opted to purchase it.  What a beast to ship! [eek]

If any of the Woodpecker management is reading, quite a number of people are apparently interested in another run of the large squares!

I could go for a 48" in anodized aluminum from Woodpecker's  [eek]    No, really.  [smile]  As it currently stands though, the 26" combined with the 48" SERX does a nice job.  [thumbs up]

I would agree but there is no need for them to read this as they have a one time tool rerun sign up sheet. They clearly sell a bunch of the 1281 squares and many, many stores keep them in stock. It is pretty obvious that it is THE big seller. It has to be far more work to make them in bigger sizes since the main piece is one chunk of aluminum, leaving an interesting manufacturing procedure unless you want lots of waste material.

I bought a 26" woodpeckers and use it a bunch even though I have various Double, Combination and (use of) Master Squares up to 24". Next time they make a run of the larger ones, I will buy an 18" and have left my email on their sign up sheet. If you want to encourage them, sign up here: http://www.woodpeck.com/ottsignup.html

yes they do have a sign up sheet, which I did, later on months later,I asked about that one time tool, they said oh we got some of those how many you want, happy for the offer,at the same time ,I said why didnt they answer my request, end result I got what I wanted, just not as soon. I guess that would be called a" one more tool"

Well...........I am going to say Ed Bennett's TS aligner gear. I was in the same boat as you. I originally posted a request on Lumberjocks, after trying to make contact with him. Everyone says he's out of the buisness, yet his web site still remains. I find that peculiar and no one knows really as you mentioned just guessing. So,I read his web site and figured out where he was living. Tracked down his home phone number and knew it was him by his voice on the voicemail, after hearing it so many times, while trying to contact him at his buisness. He never returned my calls from either place. So I started posting on forums where I could. Then I got a private message from a guy about 6 months later from Illinois on the Lumberjocks website (after inquiring a few times) in my email and he had one. I live in NL, Canada and made all the arrangements to get it. I wanted this because I was impressed with Ed's work and after reading through his website thoroughly I knew this was a very fine instrument. Just like Festool gear. And I wanted this instrument and was not stopping until I got one, and I am getting a new home for it in a Sys 2 Vari.
Remember the words of Sir Winston Churchill, "Never Give Up", in a speech he gave in '45 at a school. So, persevere my friend, and you can have one. Someone has the squares you are looking for. They are out there, you just have to turn over more rocks to find them.  [wink]

Regards,
Dan
