This is a blanket chest I have just finished made from native Irish Ash.

All the joints are dominoed including the panels.

Hi Gareth & welcome to the FOG.  Nice looking chest.  There is some really  nice figure to that ash.

hi gareth and welcome to the fog!

thats a great looking blanket chest there, i haven't seen irish ash in a long time.

btw, i think you are the only other person on the fog who is from norn iron!

i am from tyrone myself.

which county are you from?

regards, justin.

Hi Justin,
I am from Antrim, Whitehead.

I buy the ash from Clarke Cunningham in Crossgar. His company does the whole lot. Tree surgeons, processing the wood and making furniture. I make a lot of stuff using ash from him. It is very nice to work with. I have bought Elm, Sycamore and pippy oak from him. I have not used the oak yet.

i use tongue and grooved tasmanian (tassie) oak quite a lot here in oz.

people like it for lining ceilings and roofs.

it is not as beautiful as american, english or irish oak but still looks good when finished.

australian western red cedar is very difficult to buy now, and it costs a fortune too.

i have done a lot of furniture making in my time, i started my apprentice ship with tyrone traditional furniture, then moved into construction.

speaking of construction, is there much work about  in norn iron now?

justin.

Hi Justin,
construction work in NI is not great at the moment. I am in software, but work with construction companies and builders merchants. I heard of a builders merchant whos turnover is down to 40% of what it was 2 years ago. That is tough. Many building companies are laying people off here. Facilities Management companies are doing well, as I think people are maintaining what they have rather than building new.

In the south it is even worse. The numbers down there are crazy. 20% of houses in the south at the moment are not occupied. There are whole estates that have been built with nobody in them. There was a huge building boom in the south over the past few years. The government are thinking of actually flattening some estates just to get rid of them. These are crazy times here!
