I thought you all might enjoy a bit of history. While looking at radial arm saws I came across a reference to a little known saw produced by a company called Irvinton. A quick check with google images and it is basically a Bosch Glide Miter Saw only 50 years older and cast iron. Fascinating eh?
 
this is cool, though this was the classic solution before inexpensive linear bearings .
 
It wasn't the only cross cut saw with that design. Oliver made something fairly similar.

Danckaert made a different style as well, almost like a sliding miter saw.
