Hi,

The charger (MC 15) for my CDD 12 FX drill seems to be dead.  When I put a battery pack into the charger, nothing happens.  No lights come on yellow, green or red.
I was wondering if anyone has seen this problem.  Should I contact Festool tech support to see if this is fixable?  I'm hoping its fixable because a new charger is around $200.  Yikes.

Sure you have power coming out of the wall?  ;)

Never hurts to ask.

Sounds like you need to call Festool Support on Monday. Don't know how long you have had the drill but if it is within three years you should be covered.

I'm sure its getting power but I'm not sure how long I've had it.  Must be more than 3 years. This will be my 1st experience sending something back to Festool for repair.

Having spent over 20 years troubleshooting electronics I can almost guarantee the first question asked will be the power outlet. Just to be safe, plug a light, corded drill or some other tool in to the outlet and just confirm you have power.

I once got a call from a person complaining out TV station was off the air in her area. She also asked me to call the other two TV stations in town to tell them they too were not on the air. I politely asked her to confirm her neighbours were not receiving the TV stations either. She was rather embarassed when she called back and mentioned the issue was with her TV and not the transmitters in her area.

Happens.

According to the instructions for the MCU15, with no batteries inserted, both LEDs should be steady yellow to indicate power is reaching the charger it is ready for use.

Apart from taking Dan's excellent advice of making absolutely sure that the socket has power, you might want to try:

  • Opening the plug to ensure that the wires are not loose
  • Whilst the charger is connected to the supply and switched on, move the charger about and jiggle the cable to see if the LEDs come on. Sometimes, if you use an appliance a lot and always wind the flex the same way when putting the appliance away, the wires can fracture inside the flex. This often happens at the point where the flex enters the appliance or plug.

In addition, if you were in the UK I'd also suggest checking/changing the fuse in the 13A plug, but I don't think you've got fused plus in the USA.

Needless to say, if you don't feel confident at doing the above, then don't try it.

If you've only tried it in one outlet, you might want to move it to one that you have a working TV or other electronic device plugged into.

I have a friend that completely disassembled his Karcher pressure washer and could find nothing wrong with it. When I went to his house, he had replaced it with a gasoline powered model and offered me his old, "broken" one.

I tried it on the spot, it didn't work. I had come over to do some wiring on a remodel. I got out my Wiggy and checked the outlet. It responded as expected. I went to the distribution panel and found that the neutral wire was loose because I noticed it had gotten hot enough to discolor the insulation. Apparently, the pump wasn't getting enough voltage because of the loose connection but the outlet wasn't dead and his drop light worked seemingly fine in the same outlet, which was his test.

I now have a working power washer.

I have tried multiple outlets on different circuits just to make sure its not the outlet.  I also checked all the outlets with another tool to make sure the outlet was working.

Hi Mark
I have a spare charger I would be willing to sell for $95 + shipping if it is going to cost to much to have festool repair yours. I have 3 cdd 12 drills and I keep one charger in my van and one in my shop and I never use the third charger. I took the insert out of one of the systainers so I could keep more accessories with the drill and keep it attached to the second one with the charger.

Mine just died in the same manner. How did you resolve the problem? Please help! Thanks.

First,  [welcome] to the FOG.

I would think the answer is obvious, call Festool's service department.  You'll find the phone number on one of your Festool tools.

Rachel, have you confirmed it is the charger and not the battery? Check it out with another battery before concluding the charger is dead.
