Folks -

I want to try to center some 4mm tenons  in 11 mm thick stock. However, the fence on  my 500 will not come all the way down at 90 degrees. Any angle much less than that, and the fence comes all the way down. I saw the half-inch shy page on filing off a corner, but my fence is the newer type and is shaped differently.

I realize I can reference off the base and raise the workpiece a bit, or attach a shim to the fence, but I'm wondering if there is a more elegant solution. After all, Festool made 4mm tenons which are the right size for 12 mm thick workpieces, and I'm guessing that most times folks reference off their fence at 90 degrees, so why make the fence so you can't center these little tenons?
So, how do folks center their tenons in thin  stock?  And, if you use shims or raising the workpiece, details on how best to do that would be appreciated.  Thanks,

Ken

I was doing this exact thing over the last weekends, and used the shim method - put the fence at 90 degrees, used a shim (offcut of 11mm ply) on the plate, and raised the height of the fence until the centre mark at the edge of the metal met the centre mark of the plywood being plunged into.

Did some test plunges and then fine adjustments until it was right.

What becomes difficult is to then line up the sighting marks in the window - as they were obscured by the shim. I needed to extend the pencil alignment marks so that I could see them further up the fence.

I would also be interested in other solutions.

Why not simply drill a ~¾" to 1" dia. hole (or whack a quick slot) at the front of the 11mm shim through which you can see the alignment marks?

Hah hah, I never even thought about that! Simple and effective! Thanks heaps - I still have quite a few to go.  [big grin]
