It would be great if there was an internet page either on the Festool USA site or here at FOG to contain a running list of stolen Festool products. This would help us from buying a stolen tool and possibly discourage theft-sales of Festool goods.

This is already in the works for our website. There will not be a list, instead you will be able to enter a serial number and the site will tell you if a tool is on our list of stolen tools. There will also be the ability to report a registered tool stolen.

This is great Shane, any ETA on this?

Shawn,

I am working on adding some addition functionality to the site this week. Hopefully, it's something that I can get done in the coming week or two. Especially with the recent flurry of stolen tool activity on eBay.

Thank you! A great customer of ours called us right away when he found a DF500 in a local Pawn shop, although we had one stolen years ago, the serial numbers did not match, I called LV downtown and it turns out it was theirs, I think they got it back.

If you are a dealer or an end user this feature would be great to have and innovative in the tool industry.  We (dealers) usually get the call first from the Customer asking for the Receipt and serial number for insurace, at that point we should be adding it to the list right away.

Thanks

While I'm not in the position to offer any legal advice on the topic, I would recommend to anyone who was the unsuspecting buyer of those stolen tools that they contact eBay and/or Paypal to open a case with them and report the purchase of stolen property. I have contacted eBay and reported the sellers, so they should have record from us, the manufacturer. I have read that eBay will issue a refund based on some online research, but I can't make any guarantees. It's better than being in possession of stolen property. Like I said, this is an unfortunate consequence and risk of buying from someone other than an authorized dealer.

I had another idea related to this, any way to see how much warranty is left on each tool by searching serial numbers? Would be nice to be able to verify claims from sellers when buying some tools secondhand.

I haven't thought it through entirely, but I haven't come up with a situation where this could be abused.

Interesting thought. I, for one, would not want anyone to see this information for me. It's not about the warranty - I just don't want John Q Public knowing what tools I own. Bad OpSec - as is listing your tools in your signature. (I had mine listed but removed them some months ago.)

I can see a way around it though, and that's by having a flag bit (checkmark) that you check to allow public searches. You could enable this bit for a toll that you wanted to sell, but keep all of your other tools private. Just one idea...

I wouldn't want to see who owns it or anything (nor would it be wise for Festool to disclose), just how much warranty is left. It changes the value proposition when buying (for me at least).

The dealer I buy all of my landscaping toys from keeps records of every sale.  I had bought a small blower from him and when I got home, the blower was gone.  I called him to see if I had left it beside where I had been parking.  It was no where to be found.  13 years later, I got a call from the girl at his counter. She had my "old" blower.  When i looked it over, it appeared it had NEVER been used.  I recalled the job i had gone to after I had bought the blower.  t was the same owner who had brought the blower in because he could not get it started. The counter girl looked up the serial number and called me.  13 years after i had purchased, I had a like brand new blower.  That was a few years ago and it still runs like a brand new machine.  It still starts on the second pull of the cord.  It was real thoughtful of that homeowner to have kept that blower in dry storage until i needed it. ;D
