I'm just about to embark on a kitchen design and was wonering if anyone had a check list of items you may want in a kitchen. For example, pot drawers, spice drawer, cookie sheet storage, wine rack, utensil drawer etc. Looking for a list that would have ideas/items a person may want in a kitchen.
Thanks,
JC

It really depends on the client. I usually ask them what they want in there (and, usually, end up telling them they can't physically fit in everything they've asked for!).

Pullout wastebasket should top the list.

I try to convince people with larger kitchens of the merits of a second prep sink.  Every client seems to think they can't live without two sinks in the master bath, but can't see the utility of an extra sink in the kitchen.

Some people really want gizmos and gadgets, an excuse to spend money.  Appease them with the glorified fillers that are 3" and 6" pullout racks, and fancy-schmancy blind corner "solutions."

I guess what I'm getting at is the first thing on a checklist should be to determine whether the kitchen is for show, or for utility.  More like a flowchart than a checklist.

I try to make sure the kitchen has good "workflow"
Is the dishwasher close to the sink?, prep space close to sink, fridge central to prep area.
Essentially a kitchen is a work place. Not only should it be beautiful but uber functional. Find out how the client will use the kitchen. Entertaining,(bar seating) baking, marble slab inset into rork top, breakfast nook, liquor cabinet ,wine storage, wine fridge?,pantry style cabinet with tall pull outs.
Pull out compost and recycling bins are really nice. I also like all drawers for my lowers. No reaching into the back bottom cupboard. Some really big drawers with heavy duty slides for dry goods. Lighting!! Very important. LED strip lighting under uppers add great ambient light. Pendants over island. Power in the island. Pivoting pull out style shelving instead of "obsolete lazy Susan. Microwave or no? Recessed wall framing do fridge doesn't stick out. 42" walkway between island snd  counters. Flip up upper cabinet foors r fun.
What a ramble...

Ps prep sink great idea by previous poster. In island or prep area

Basics of kitchen design are work triangle, appropriate storage close to work areas and then aesthetics.
Work triangle is the positioning of sink, cooker and fridge to keep distance needing to be walked between all three as short as possible.
Appropriate storage is cupboard space for pots/pans, knives, spices/seasonings ( as mentioned above- spices away from heat, also wine racks they seem to get put next to the oven as a space filler too often).
Dishwasher next to the sink is always good, less plumbing required, sinks also come with 2 & a 1/2 bowls to multi-task but the option of a secondary sink near to veg storage is a good one if space allows.
Take note of the stature of the clients, tall or high wall cabinets are pain in the backside for vertically challenged people, just ask my Suzy  [wink]
When you go to do a survey measure everything and note where all existing plumbing or electrical points are, moving some is no big deal but the cost of re-routing them all to suit the design gets pricey fast.
Some of the gadgetry is vastly overrated and accordingly overpriced, keep it simple but classy. The only things not overrated are full extension drawer slides, those things rock!
