CMS-GE and a 2200 router

I would like to install a 2200 router in a CMS table.  I have been told that the table was designed for it but it is not permitted to be sold as such in this country.  Does anybody have experience with this?
Thanks,
Rich

I have a 2200 mounted in a CMS-OF and it is a very good router able to handle the heaviest work.

That is the situation in the rest of the world but in the USA it is not permitted or you will "lose your warranty". The story is that the switch can't handle the heavy current of the 2200 but having seen the specs on the switch, in every other application except festools, it is rated at 64A, way more than what you can get out of a power point.

I don't see that the electrics could possibly be affected by the 2200 so I don't know what the value of the warranty is especially as you can't register the CMS to activate your warranty.

But that is just my opinion and I am sure someone will respond with the official disclaimer.

Here is the official statement:

"Warning: The Festool CMS System is approved for use with only the OF 1400 and OF 1010 routers in the US and Canadian markets.  It is not approved for use with the OF 2200, nor with any of the CMS modules currently available outside the US and Canadian markets (TS, Jigsaw and sanding modules).  Festool USA does not  endorse the use of these components and will not support them with spare  parts or repairs. The use of anything other than the OF 1400 and OF 1010 routers and their related accessories with the CMS will void the warranty agreement on the entire system for customers within the US and Canada. Festool does not endorse the application or use of any Festool product in any way other than in the manner described in the Festool Instruction Manual. To reduce the risk of serious injury and/or damage to your Festool product, always read, understand and follow all warnings and instructions in your Festool product's Instruction Manual."

That being said, the CMS ships here in North America with the mounting hardware for the 1010, 1400, and 2200 just like it does elsewhere.  There are many private users out there using the CMS with routers and other modules here in North America at their own risk in the privacy of their own shops and basements.  It is commonly mentioned by Members here that they have heard that the issue is the switch, and that they were told that by someone at Festool.  I totally believe that may be the case, but to the best of my knowledge Festool has not issued an official statement to that effect.

As a Festool user myself I don't have the 2200 nor any of the other modules but wish that in the future there is a way to expand the versatility of the CMS here in line with the rest of the world.  I like my CMS as a router table, but increased versatility here would increase my usage and productivity as I would suggest it would do for others.

In the future use the Forum Search link (it's at the top of the page under the G in "FOG"). It will save us all from seeing yet another thread on the OF2200 and CMS.

I have two 2200 mounted in CMS', I don't plug the router into the vac.  They work fine...just don't tell Festool

I dont have one installed as festool does not authorize its use and may void the warranty, But its works great and even though theres a warning about the amps of the switch v the 2200, I wouldnt of had any problems using it for the last 5 years if I were to have one installed in my CMS that is

Hi Jobsworth,

I have a 2200 and am thinking about buying the CMS GE.  It is quite expensive here in Canada.

If you did have the 2200 installed in the CMS, what would you give its performance on a scale of 1 to 10 ?

Thanks.

Brian

I have a 2200 in the CMS.
Definitely a ten out of ten.
It's a great table saw as well with a '55 or a '75 in it.

If I were to have one installed Id say Its pretty darned good. It does  NOT bog down underload for anything I do with it  likeother routers I had did. When I route I go whole hog and not go multiple cuts , I just hog things out in one pass with no issues.

What I think really makes that router special is its performance being used free hand. Its the most balanced and comfortable  router I have ever used. When I took a end user class in LV, Steve set the 2200 on a MFT and turned it on and it just sat there and hummed. I didnt think anything about it until one day I had mine sitting on a MFT and plugged it in and it came on. It just sat there and hummed, perfectly balanced.

Why does that matter? Well I had the huge PC router and did the same thing, it fell off the table and chased me around the shop :>D.

Hope this helps, anything else I can help with please let me know or PM me.

Ron

Jobsworth... ;)...I used two of the big PC-7518s for years routing plastics.  I had to make a stand with a hole and eggcrate foam to sit it on so I wouldn't have to turn it on/off.  Eight hours of that BS got old in a hurry.  Oh, also, it looked like I had a snow machine turned on by the time I was done.  I used to have to build card board room to work in doors during the cold months.  Now I just empty the Oneida.

Anybody know off hand what the part(s) number(s) is for the plate and rig to fit the 2200?

well since I dont have a 2200 in my CMS wouldnt know the the green centering ring comes in the box with the other centering rings

This all too funny how we all show our acknowledgement to what is recommended, if the OP was to use the vilumunis search engine we have here one would find the Achilles heal of the system Festool lays out and how different members have done the “work around”
and that’s easily remedied with the right switch. The 2200 is awesome in the cms and we all know it...it’s not un heard of for Tools to be sometimes tweaked to work for us in different ways
I for one wouldn’t be with out it....it works sooo well

Agree with [member=10147]jobsworth[/member] - I use my 2200 for big freehand work, and it excels at that - terrific balance and dust collection.  My router table, which I made, has a PC beastie and it's going to stay there, where it also excels - no concerns about balance in the router lift, and the table/fence dust collection is pretty good.

I had my OF2200 in my CMS for several years but then I had a brain wave - the ergonomics of the OF1400 for hand held routing is not as good as the OF2200. The dust collection of the OF1400 is slightly awkward for hand held routing compared to the OF2200.

So, I swapped them over and now have the OF1400 in the CMS. It works brilliantly, plenty of power and I think it suits the setup a little better. Dust collection is excellent and there is very little risk that the slightly fragile OF1400 plastic dust collection add-on will get damaged.

So, for any NA person I would say, why worry about the OF2200 in the CMS and use the OF1400 and keep your warranty.
