I am working on a maple dresser.
I have been applying 2 coats of a 1:10 Titebond/water sizing then General Finishes dye-stain.  I think the sizing mellows out the colors pretty much the amount I was looking for.

But I have curly maple for the drawer fronts and not sure what to do.  I don't want to eliminate the tiger-striping.    I was thinking of just applying one coat of the sizing on the drawer fronts.

Any opinions out there ?

My fall-back procedure is to make samples from scrap and then view it in the location where it is to go.

Don’t skip that last step.  Differing lighting and different reflective surfaces can change the appearance significantly.  So do view it in the location where it is to go.

I didn't think I had enough curly maple to do a proper test on.    A small sample does not always give a proper indication of what the final product will look like.

But then I realized I could do some tests on the back-side of the drawer fronts.    The drawer fronts are inset, so very little of the back is visible, and if worst comes to worst, I will just sand it off and try again.
