New to FOG and thinking to get TS 55 and MFT/3.  Can I cut crown moulding flat with TS 55 on MFT/3?  I know there are better tools to do the job, but I may need to cut that once or twice in a year.  Just wonder it it can be done.
Thank,  Kim

I've heard that another member (Warnerconstruction)has used his mft to do it.  Same principle as a scms, so it shouldn't be a problem.

Hi, Kim,

Unless it's taller than my mitre saw can handle (I've an Hitachi... but lust for the Festool unit!) I always cut it upright, using an inexpensive jig I purchased at Rona here in Ottawa, Ontario Canada.  The jig can be readily duplicated, as all it does is hold the molding at the same angle it'll be against the wall and ceiling.

  Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Marty

Jon,

What is scms?

The hardest part of cutting a large piece of crown with the mft/3 and the TS-55 is remembering the dang degrees and bevels for cutting flat.

I usually have to look that up when I do it.

I'm horribly inexperienced with cutting crown on the flat.  So I reverse-nest the large crown (pretend the fence is toward you) in my miter saw, and cut as far as I can, then just match the bevel and angle to the semi-cut piece.  Less math, and works well.

Yes you can.  I am using a 3-5/8" crown at Home Depot for kitchen cabinets which has a 38 degree spring angle.  I set the ts55 base on 34 degrees and set the mft angle rail on 31.5.  Then use your guide rail and cut at 90 degrees (normal) with the crowns top edge closest to you.  It lines up perfectly.  I use a gel ca glue with the spray activator and just hold the miter together for a few seconds for it to set.  Brilliant and spot on.  Not sure what other angles you need for other crown, but it works well with the 3-5/8 plastic man made material from Home Depot.  [big grin]

Sounds like one of those situations where you could, by why on earth would you...

Like using your TS saw and MFT to build a deck.
