Finally got my Oliver 103 pattern mill running and used it for the task I bought it for.

Nice Darcy. What a beautiful machine.
No link in your post. .
Hopefully this works.
Rick.

I tried to post a link to Darcy’s you tube channel.
Looks like it didn’t post.
Sorry.

Thanks, both links/previews showed up in my OP.  Hmmmmm

It's not very pretty, but it works perfectly now. Doubt I will do much to it other than keep cleaning bright parts and keep it lubed.

No links, not pics, only one line of text.

Leaves me curious how a pattern mill relates to crowning bandsaw wheels.

I am copy and pasting link from youtube. I am using Tapatalk.

That's what my first post looks like. Hmmm

Thanks Darcy for sharing.
I just found the crowning video by you tube search of your channel.
Your tool always fascinate me. I’m all for old iron versus new tools with less quality.
I currently own a Boice crane drill press from the early 1970 and a 1953 Northfield 8” joint. I can’t wait to get these up and running in my new shop. They been back in storage for the last two years.
Rick.

Pattern mills are fairly rare anymore and I figured sharing a unconventional way of crowning tires would be interesting.  I did a set of 36" ones as well. I need a hoist to lift heavy stuff on the table, I couldn't lift up a 36" steel wheel by myself.

Well, being unable to see the video, my question is rather than crowning the tires, why couldn't you crown the band saw wheels instead? Just machining a slight curvature to the wheels would also translate the curvature to the tires and thus control the tracking of the band saw blade.

Some are. The little 16" wheels had a crown machined into them, but they still required a clean up to true them, btw those sucked to epoxy tires on as they wanted to pop off.

The epdm tires will end up slightly different thickness all the way around. So even crowned wheels still need trueing and dressing.

Takes a big lathe to spin a 36" wheel.

Now that's screwy, when I quote my first post, the links show up, but when I hit post they are not there.

No issues anywhere else

I agree. I tried to share your link also. It didn’t post to my reply but when I went back to edit my post it was there, hit save and it disappears again.

Thanks Darcy, that was pretty interesting.  [big grin]

Two observations;
In the first video the use of the Jacobs style chuck to hold the tooling.
In the second video the ease at which the table rotates, it's just a one handed affair.

All tooling is mt4 with a draw bar. The chuck was just in it when I got it. They were using it as a drill press. Lol.

I used a mt4 collet holder to hold my flap disc.

I probably spent about 30 hours cleaning, lubing, fixing wiring, etc.  It was kinda crusty, ok it still is, but the movements are now for the most part clean.

Thanks Warner and Alex. That machine is awesome! Makes a regular milling machine envious.

You gonna offer a wheel truing service?

I have had at least 10 people ask that. Apparently there is a demand, I just loathe shipping large obsolete wheels.
