So...I have never owned a festool vac, but was able to snag a CT 36 Autoclean in the recon sale.  My question is, can you still outfit it with a HEPA filter or no?  The only reason that I would assume that you would not be able to use one would be that the mechanism the Knocks the dust of the bag or whatever, may take the spot where the HEPA goes?  Again, purely speculation.  Anywho... Just hoping I made the right choice in haste.

Yes you can use a hepa filter as the filters all look the same and are all the same size.  The drywall filter I believe is just larger micron to not clog as easy when the drywall dust hits it. The on/off function of the autoclean allows the cake to fall off the filter and into the special open clear pastic drywall vac bag. The drywall bag is basically an open trash bag for the cake to fall into. If you had a regular festool vac bag, the dust would clog in the bag and reduce suction.  But for some reason the ct36ac cannot be called a "hepa vac" even with the hepa filter, which I hope someone can explain. It seems like it's no different than the other festool vacs which are hepa rated, minus the auto clean function.

You made a fine choice, it's a regular ct vac with an extra option being it has the on/off auto clean function to drop the cake off the filter.  There's a blast gate for regular ct's I believe so that operators can manually knock the cake filter off by sliding the blast gate open and closed.

The CT 36 AC should never be used for RRP work.

Yes, you can optionally purchase and install a HEPA filter. Turn off the Auto Clean feature when the HEPA filter is installed. Otherwise, you may risk compromising the filter.
