This guy is just about ready for finish. It's Red Oak and the floating "flames" are Maple. Except where the posts are half lapped with the bottom rail, the thing is held together with (35) Dominos.

Well, that's certainly awesome.  Did you shape the spindles or find 'em like that?
 
This design was a collaboration with the client.

First, one section was drawn full scale on a piece of plywood to get the spindles looking right. The plywood "spindles" were cut out on a bandsaw, finish sanded and used as templates. The "flames" were rough cut on the bandsaw from 8 quarter Maple. It was fun figuring out how to do the piercings with that bandsaw.
 
That's a real creative build.  It looks like the flame will be lighter and have a subtle contrast with the surrounding wood when everything has finish on it.  Was that why you chose the two woods?

Mike, Yes, I've used Oak and Maple together before and really like the subtle contrast.

Here is a fun project with the two woods in a checkerboard like pattern.
