Hi all,
How can I rout a groove in the middle of the front side of a table top? I got the edge routing stuff, but it does not lower the router enough to do exactly that.
It's meant for inserting a slim long bar of aluminium or stainless as decor.
Yes, I know it may be a silly q., but I am a beginner in routers  [scared].

Cheers,
Jacques  [wink]

hi,
How about using a  collet extension that should give some more depth for the router cutter,
or flip the table vertically and use  a straight bit ? Hope this helps, post a picture  [smile]

there are a couple ways of doing this.  I would reccomend a plunge router and a collet.  Create a pattern placed the amount of the bit from the collet and put it over the template plunge down go till you hit the stop. Another way would be (if it's just a groove) is to use a pattern bit (bearing over bit) and agian place a template down and let the bearing follow the template and bingo a nice strait grouve.

The Festool Plexiglass Template (495246) would be perfect for this job.  We got to use it in router class at Lebanon last month.  You can place your groove anywhere on the side of the top and even adjust th groove to a custom width with an undersized bit.

Which is the most precise way to do it? (I have to insert a 3,5 meter long 4mm thin alurail).

Cheers,
Jacques.

I would use one of these for the front edge slot,
Slot%20Router.jpg

and make a shallow cut first using the router edge guide to stop splintering or chipping.

Hm - the 495246 is nice but the price is pretty stiff for occasional use only 8^)

But as always a fellow festoolian has recently done something about it  [tongue]
