Developed Torque in C12 Drill ???

The literature which accompanied my new C12 drill says the machine will develop 260 inch pounds of torque. In order to have a standard of comparison, how does that number compare to ---say--- a corded Milwaukee 1/2-inch drill? (neither Milwaukee or DeWalt publish torque specifications on their website).

I am curious because the 3-Phase AC current in the Festool is so unique in a battery-operated machine. Other than reducing the weight and prolonged battery charge , why should anyone care?

Comparing a heavy duty corded drill to any cordless just isn't fair.  Dewalt used to claim around 400 in lbs of force for most of their 18v drills before switching the UWO measure.  Don't ask I don't know what the hell a uwo is.

The real benefit of 3 phase motor is that it is brushless, removing a heavy wear item.  You have to understand that 3 phase motors are the standard for VERY  heavy duty motors.  The actually theory behind it is too long to get into here but lets just put it this way 3 phase better than 1 phase better than dc.

The theory behind actually is not that difficult to understand. Wikipedia sums it up well:

3 phase

I think there may be confusion as I believe the 3 phase we are talking about here is DC:

look here:

3phase discussion for DC

"A DC brushless motor can indeed be 3-phase. In fact, 3-phase is the most common. This refers to the number of electrical phase windings on the motor. It is switched via a 3-phase power "bridge" from a DC voltage supply." quote taken from link

Here is a nice link for brushless DC motors:

So, no one has a torque number of another drill for comparison purposes?

Although the US Milwaukee website doesn't seem to have the torque figures easily available, their UK website does list them. Unfortunately the figures are in Newton metres (Nm) rather than inch pounds, and the model numbers are different, but it should give you the general idea. To convert from one measurement system to another, seehttp://www.onlineconversion.com/torque.htm

For Festool, the figures for the C12 and TDK are:

Cordless drill C12 3.0 Ah Set
Battery voltage:  12 V
Idling speed:  setting 1: 0 - 450 rpm, setting 2: 0 - 1500 rpm
Max drill diameter:  in steel: 9/16" (14 mm), in wood: 1" (25 mm)
Torque setting range:  17.7 - 61.95 in. lbs. (2-7 Nm)
Max torque:  in wood: 159.3 in. lbs. (18 Nm), in steel: 265.5 in. lbs. (30 Nm)
Chuck capacity:  1/2" (13 mm)
Weight:  3 lbs. 13.4 ounces

Cordless drill TDK 12 CE
Battery voltage:  12 V
No-load speed:  0 - 430 rpm (low gear), 0 - 1400 rpm (high gear)
Chuck capacity:  1/2" (13 mm)
Max drill diameter:  in steel: 9/16" (14 mm), in wood: 1" (25 mm)
Torque setting range:  4.5 - 62 in. lbs. (0.5 - 7 Nm)
Max torque:  in wood: 175 in. lbs. (20 Nm), in steel: 250 in. lbs. (28 Nm)
Weight:  4.4 lbs. (2 kg)

Cordless drill TDK 15.6 CE Set
Battery voltage:  15.6 V
No-load speed:  0 - 450 rpm (low gear), 0 - 1500 rpm (high gear)
Chuck capacity:  1/2" (13 mm)
Max drill diameter:  in steel: 5/8" (16 mm), in wood: 1 3/8" (35 mm)
Torque setting range:  4.5 - 62 in. lbs. (0.5 - 7 Nm)
Max torque:  in wood: 220 in. lbs. (25 Nm), in steel: 320 in. lbs. (28 Nm)
Weight:  5 lbs (2.3 kg)

Be aware that manufacturers may have different methods of measuring torque, and therefore comparing figures from one manufacturer to another can sometimes be a bit deceptive.
