I got in some Diamant recently and loaded it on my website.

There are 2 sizes, 150 mm diameter and 80 mm diameter. For each size, there are 4 grits - 500, 1000, 2000, and 3000.

They are a lot like Platin except I think they are even for harder materials. Like Platin, they are a spongy, no-holes disk.

Tom,

Do you think I could get away with using an 80mm disk on my RO 90 DX?  (it's the only sander I own)

Also, if sanding, then polishing granit, would I use the 2K & 3K Diamant plain, or with some kind of compound?

-thanks

Honestly, I don't know how this stuff works.

I have some semi-new granite that was installed in our kitchen. Part of the edge is giving me heartburn and I want to fix it. It looks kind of rough.

I'll try to do some before-and-after in the next day or so...

You'll want to run it up to 3k and you want to run it wet; wash away swarf as you go especially at the higher grits and definitely wash away everything before progressing to the next grit.  I used it on a piece of Onyx for the "No Comment #2" build I posted here last week.  Although granite has varying densities depending on the crystalline mineral, Onyx has vastly different densities; it can cause dishing if you are pressing hard.  If you are working Granite, it is less of an issue.  Don't press hard and dishing is less an issue.

Wash out the pads from the back (so the stone doesn't get further embedded).  This is a case where skipping grits or not finishing a grit will get you nowhere.

When I get to the build episode focusing on the Onyx work, I'm thinking of demoing Diamant (and the saw) on Granite, Marble, Onyx (form of Marble), and Verde Granite if I can get a scrap of it (it is apparently harder).

The 80 mm pads are meant for the R0 90, but you have to use the polishing pad with them, not the standard pad. The polishing pad has a 75 mm diameter while the diamant pads are 77 mm. The normal pad for the RO 90 is 90 mm. You also need to use the rotary mode for diamant.

As Alex pointed out, the polishing pad on the RO 90 is smaller diameter than the sanding pads. That's also true of other sanders. They are designed to not ever come in contact with the work piece.

What PaulMarcel says about not skipping grits and cleaning up between grits makes perfect sense to me also. Because of that and that this stuff is so darned expensive, I'm thinking seriously about making assortments. Does anyone want assortments of these? The 80mm size are 4-packs. I suspect that a lot of people would only want one sheet of each? The 150's are sold as 2-packs so I'm not too sure it makes sense to break them up but I'm willing to.

Excellent.

Thanks !

I'd be very interest in knowing what would be a "complete" set for granite, rough to finished,  in 80mm.

- thanks

Thanks, Tom.

So are you making small assortment packs?  I personally would need the 80mm, plus a polishing pad for my RO.

Yes, I'll make an assortment of singles for the RO 90. I'll try to get it up on my site shortly...
