I spoke earlier about having the Rockler Vortex separator. (They now call it "Dust Rite Separator") There seems to be no appreciable loss of vacuum in spite of the voluum of the bucket. I have used it extensively with my HL 850. With the CMS, it leaves almost no dust. For some operations, I find no residue.
I have an old MFT 1080 that is scarred all over from countless cuts. I will eventually Bondo the scars, some are quite deep into the surface. I am experimenting with how best to protect the surface of my newer MFT/3 by using strips of MDF. Where the spaces between strips, I do lose a small amount of dust onto the floor and onto the table. I also run into some clamping problems. The strips i am using are about 6"s wide so the useful clamping holes are very limited. I am planning to rp the MDF strips in half and experiment with positioning. I am hoping to cut down on the dust escaping. For everything else, the Dust rite seems to solve most of my dust problems.
I am using peter's method of clamping a wood extension to the end of my MFT/3. That works great. Peter, thanks for the idea. I am gong to try a few of your other ideas as well.
