Does anyone use a cyclone with HL850 Planer and CT unit / Shopvac?

When I am using my HL850 planer my CT 22 seems to go from empty to full in about the time it takes to walk to the fridge and open a soda. I have read several posts about using cyclone units in front of shop vacs / dust extractors. Given that the smaller hoses definitely do not work on the planer and the dust deputy has a 1.5" aperture, does anyone have a success story (or what to avoid) when using the planer with a CT / ShopVac driven cyclone? Yes I do re-use my paper bags but I use my CT22 for other things than the planer and that option has limitations. For the cost of a Festool reusable bag I might be able to get something better.

PS. Note to self. Next time I wax lyrical about how good the dust extraction is and demo it - make sure that the bag is empty before I start!

Hi Steve,

I've written a couple of times about my cyclones; I have both a Clear Vue and a Dust Deputy.  I got the larger DD, which has 2" ports in and out, I use the 35 hose from DD to CT33, and a smaller one on the input side.  I've not used a planer yet (but will pretty soon) so I look forward to your feedback on this topic.

I did an unusual job today, that i wouldn't ever do without a Dust Deputy.  What i did was to auger 11 holes in the garden (read dirt, rocks, tanbark and dust) to sink some 12" pop up sprinklers which have a 13" body, so they will be flush with the ground when retracted.  My Hole Hawg drill was able to push my 3' x 2" auger down to 14" or so, but was less then stellar in clearing the holes.

Got out the Vac, Dust Deputy, extension cord, and vacuumed out about 3 gallons of dirt, tanbark, rocks (small) into the steel Dust Deputy.  Bag is still fine in the vac.  I really like having a robust front end on the vacuum.

Ah, you mention the dust deputy with 2" ports in and out. I can only find 1.5" port to the tool and 2" port to the vac. I do not want to impede the chip flow with a reducer between the tool and cyclone. Out of interest I tested a short reducer on the planer At the vac end - and the drop in performance was noticeable. Also in the short test I did the reducer clogged after a couple of minutes. The flow from the 850 to the CT 22 is very, very good with the big hose. The Clear Vue has large ports on both input and output. I hear good reports about both and for small sized sawdust it is one thing. For chips ....
Hence the open question.

Steve,

I have the Clearvue CV06 attached to my CT22.  (see attached picture).  I got the CV06 last week so I can't really speak to the performance.  I'm hoping that everything winds up in the barrel versus the Festool bag.  So far I'm very impressed.  I dont have a hand planer to test, but I think it should work fine.  Why dont you give Ed at Clearvue a call to see if he has any experience with planer shavings and the CV06.

Steve, this is the exact question I have had -- larger chips from the planer.  Let us know what you find!

Mark, I see from your picture you are using non-Festool hoses from the CT 22 to the CV-06 and at the connection of the CV-06 to the Festool hose there appears to be an adapter of some kind (white ring).
Can you expand on the connections to the CV-06 please? I have contacted Ed at ClearVue and he does not appear to have the answers I need.

As I see it I would need a new AS (Anti-Static) hose, preferably a 50mm, from the CT-22 to the top port of the CV-06. I could then use the existing boom arm AS 50mm hose (about 6 ft long) from the CV-06 port to the boom arm. By purchasing an adapter sleeve (short AS tube) I could then detach the short boom arm hose from the boom arm, put the short adapter sleeve onto it and directly connect any of my regular hoses. If sealing (taping) needed doing at the cyclone ports it could be done and, more importantly, I could wrap a ground wire around the CV-06 between the two AS hoses.

Thanks

This is a good discussion.  The question of which dust collection to use with the planer comes up now and then (I just got the Festool planer, so it's relevant to me).

But I think this discussion belongs in the more active "Festool Tools & Accessories" area, rather than the off-topic area.  It will get more attention there.

I'm going to move it shortly.

OK, please move it! I thought there would be a quick answer - it is obviously more of a challenge than I thought it would be. The various cyclones are not Festool - hence I put it here.
Thanks

Steve, I've done just what you have described (almost, I've not tried the wire on the ClearVue), it works. I use this setup for my jointer and even my surface planer.
One more note, I'm not sure the wire around the ClearVue will work. I think the wire would need to be on the inside of the cyclone, but I'm not sure.

Brice,
Can you tell me how well you manage to connect the Festool hoses to the ClearVue please? This is a major part of the general question. If I need adapters to make the standard hose connectors fit I need to find them. A picture of your setup would help.
Thanks
SteveD

Steve, no adapters needed. The hoses fit as is. I use the short 50mm hose from the boom arm to connect the CT22 to the ClearVue, the D36, D27 or standard shopvac hose to go from the ClearVue to the tool. If I get some time I'll post a pic.

A very timely discussion. I just received the CV-06 and havent connected it yet. The large picture will help me immensely.

I attached a couple of more pictures to show my setup.  I'm using a 5ft length of Mr Nozzle hose between the CT22 and CV06.
I had a 24ft length I wasn't using, so I cut it. I'd like to use a Festool hose but they dont sell lengths that short and I didn't want to buy a $80 dollar
hose and cut it half. I'd like to get the hose for the boom adapter but I dont see that listed as a part you can buy.  Steve asked about the white
ring and that can be clearly seen in the picture below.  It comes with the CV06.  Its glued to the plastic and gives you a 2 1/4
inch hole to plug into.   Both holes are a standard 2 1/4 inches.

The next thing I want to get is the bigger version of this and retire my 1hp dust pump/chip collector.

Mark, thanks...that will make job easier. Question: aer you sure these don't also milk cows?

John,

I'm sure a clever woodworker could come up with something.  I enjoy your site by the way.  I'm also from RI so go Sox and Pats.

Mark, Looks like a winner!  Thanks for posting these pics.

Mark, very impressive Indeed!  Great Idea, I use the 8fiddy a ton to open up exotic turning blanks, this idea will be implemented today...what do I owe ya?

I did a pretty good shop cleaning this weekend and managed to put about 2in of stuff into the drum. Mostly sawdust, dirt and small leaves that blow in.
Nothing in the Festool bag so it looks like its working well.  I also wanted to reitterate that I dont have a Festool planer to test.  The next
time I use my lunchbox planer I'll take those shaving and empty them on the floor to see how that works.
