Does anyone use an OF1010 router with a Leigh D4R dovetail jig?

Hi,

The largest router I own is an OF1010EBQ. I'm thinking of purchasing a Leigh D4R dovetail jig. Would the OF1010 have enough grunt to be useful with the Leigh jig or should I be looking at getting hold of a bigger router?

I would suspect that a 1010 would be a bit underpowered for the Leigh jig. I would think a 1400 would be better suited. Personally I use a 2000.

Regards,

Rob

1010 works fine. If anything you'll want to buy another so that you can chuck up the dovetail bit and the straight bit at the same time, so you dont have keep swapping out bits.  ;D

I think you'll be just fine with that router.  I own both that router and the D4R and most of the bits used are 8MM shanks so the 1010 will work great.  In addition, you don't waste all of the wood in one pass so that is a further aid in using smaller routers.

I have used my OF1010 with my D4 a number of times. While I prefer a fixed based router (A DW618 in my case) for this kind of work due to the lower center of gravity, the OF101 worked just fine. You do not need or even want a big powerful router for dovetail work...it's not a about "powering through" the job and that technique would make for poor joinery and tend to break bits. Rather, you want something you can easily control while you carefully work through the cutting.

One great thing about the OF1010 for this work is that it comes natively with an 8mm collet. Cutters are much stronger in 8mm than 1/4" shank as there is a lot of lateral pressure exerted on the cutters.

I use my OF1010 with my Leigh Super 24 in red oak and lyptus and have no complaints (well, aside from the difficulties of keeping Lyptus from tearing out, but that's not about the jig or the router), and expect to be doing a bunch with Eastern hard maple shortly.

I don't have the festool router, but I use my PC 690 and 890 series on my d4r and no issues.  You are not hogging off all the wood in one pass but in multiple passes.  I have the 690 with the strait bit & the 890 in fixed base for the angle bit.  I'm lazy and don't want to take the time to change bits.  I've been eying that router and my gut says it would be fine.

Thanks everyone for the replies. It is very helpful being able to ask this type of question.
