Kapex Mobile Base: $575.00
Kapex Trimming Attachment: $630
Total: $1,205 (if purchasing both separately)

or

Kapex Mobile Base with Trimming Attachment (set): $960.00

The reason I ask is because my local dealer has the mobile base and I just about bought it today until I realized that I would be paying $245.00 more for the pleasure of buying these items separately.

Seems rather silly doesn't it?

It's called product bundling and it's a common practice.

For example, look at almost any Woodpecker product line and you'll notice the kit is less expensive than buying them individually. Resellers can potentially move more product with kit pricing.

The logic is just what you noted. Someone needs the mobile base today but might not need the trimming attachment right now -- or ever -- but maybe they'll need it at some point. Do you want to spend $960 and just have both, or spend an extra $245 when you eventually need it (you might never need it, but what if?).

There's a psychological element at play here.

If that bundle price difference concerns you, don't even think of looking at the difference between buying the MFT/3 table solo vs. the Set with the rail and accessories; even if you threw away almost everything in the Set, the rail is almost cheaper to buy that way than by itself.

The MW-1000 with or without the extension table is also a bit of a bear.  The big difference on that is that the Extension Table is actually pretty handy to use with the MFT/3 or CMS, so the "extra" bit is actually a useful accessory to have more than one of (I have no need for multiple sets of mitre gauges and rail hinges).

ST-Duo and stand combo vs. separately...

The Kapex bundle is one of the things that woke me up to the idea that getting a Kapex stand on clearance (retailer was no longer an authorized dealer) by itself wasn't necessarily that much of a bargain once I still had to find/buy the wings separately.  I think my total package price from buying the Kapex stand for 20% off and the UG wings used on eBay came out to maybe $10-15 less than the set price, and that's after having to walk away from a bunch of eBay auctions that went for really close to full retail (and sometimes over).

I think in most cases there is a difference between the base model (then adding everything later) and the set version. It is more dramatic with some tools than others, but some don't really have many accessories. ETS EC for example, it is the most boring insert for the Systainer ever. The only thing that you can add to it is either a softer or harder pad, so it's flat and open looking in there. The DF500 and all of the routers however have very complex storage.
I have always bought the set, just knowing that the accessories will cost more later and have never regretted it.

It's not the price difference that concerns me (although I do think it's silly for something this expensive), it's the convenience factor.  My local dealer happened to have the mobile stand on-site and ready to sell.  Nobody around here sells the set, or even the extensions, separately.  So the idea was I buy the table and use sawhorses until the extensions arrive from being purchased by an online dealer.

No biggie really, just need to order the set from an online dealer and wait.

Thanks.

Sure, local availability for an immediate need may drive the choice here too, but smart retailers would more likely keep the "set" version in stock. The thinking is that you will more often buy the "extras", which you may not need today, just to get the actual main tool today.

Anyone have an answer for the following:

Pricing difference between T18E Tool only vs. T18 Kit is $100.00 (So that's $100.00 for the two 4.0Ah batteries, and a TCL6 charger)
Pricing difference between TID18 Tool only vs TID18 Kit is $150.00 (So that's $150.00 for two 4.0Ah batteries, and a TCL6 charger)

why does the same set of batteries and charger cost $50 more with a TID18 compared to a T18E?

It's one of the mysteries of the universe.

It's also part of "loss leader" marketing.

There was much discussion throughout 2020 that a person looking to get into Festool's battery platform but also looking for bare tools would be best served to get a T-18 Easy-Set because the price difference was smaller than any other -Set version of the tool.

Well, sets giving a total at a discount is nothing new.

There is a way more extreme version of it btw;

See HP Colorlaserjet M553n. For the past five years it sold new with four full toner cartridges for €350. The four full toner cartridges on their own, without printer, were €700. So guess what the 2nd hand price of those printers was  [tongue]. Not that they really sold well, because even four 3rd party toner cartridges were > €350

The reverse also exists btw. Eg buying a new laptop with 32GB RAM will be more expensive than the same laptop with 16 GB plus two spare 16 GB SO-DIMMs.  [huh]

Yeah, the answer is, it is what it is.

Easy: (pun intended)
Festool position the T18E towards the little less discerning user, aka a user who consider the middle range of tools. That’s usually the best buys are. And now they compete more easily with ie; Makita/DeWalt on their more pro-consumer tools.
Even though the T18E is not sold here, it makes a very very good drill (and batteries) for the money.

TID18 is more pro-oriented, given a higher price. This was even announced by Festool to compete in price towards the top end (carpenters/framers) models from the other brands that dominate amongst heavy users. I don’t think that it has sold incredibly well here in Europe, those who curious bought early and I have seen too many new or near new for sale in the second hand market, compared to other new Festool drills. Many of the “old” PDC or TDC have dominated the used market, but I have seen only one of the new version for sale. Also, I think there are quite a few who buy kits, then strips them for the new batteries and charger - then sell the bare tool.
