Nigel said:Balcony job might interest the OP. All DF 700 multiple 14mm Sipo with polyurethane glue. This would traditionally be done with pegged mortice and tenon but here I am using the Domino. The frames were installed in October and the joints have not moved at all and I mean not at all even with all the rain/snow and crazy sunny days of 20 degrees so I am very pleased with it so far. Time will tell but I am confident the joints will hold for years no problem.
A joint in shear or compression is not mechanically 'overly challenging".
And I see none of balcony joints in tension.
A gate usually has a joint in tension of in compression which runs diagonally.
It is is in compression, then the top bar is in tension.
At least 1 joint is in compression.
A floating peg in tension is only glue strong, whereas a through tenon is either as strong as the tenon, or the shearing of the dowel, or the compression of the mortice.
All the other shear and compression joints in a gate are trivial.
