Domino trough hole tear out?

Hello. New here. Looking for advice.
Need to put 5mm domino holes completely trough a 5/8 sheet of melamine. To attach shelves on each side.
My question is will the hole tear out back side of cut, without using a Sacrificial backing
Or with care be clean on both sides.

Melamine varies in quality, so "it depends". Test cuts on some cut-offs?
Then again, even if it does, it should be pretty minimal. The shelf would cover it once assembled.

  Are you using regular length 5mm dominos? Make sure they are fully inserted in the shelf first. Otherwise when the two dominos meet in the middle, the shelf on one side may be kept from having good surface contact.  IOW the end of the shelf won't touch the side tightly enough for gluing. Shouldn't really be a problem just make sure the dominos are all the way into the mortises.

Why are you using 5/8" material?  Also, what are you planning on putting on the shelves?  MDF hasn't the strength of solid wood, and will break with little provocation.

Tiny shelves under 5in deep and 18 wide. Will have face frame all’s for support
Will end up being sections of built in unit.

I did  as suggested, test holes without backing and with backing. No issues.

Thank you,  learned fast,  a 15mm deep hole in 16mm board you can spit through what’s left, née to make sure dominos are seated, perhaps sanders a tad not to push out.

This simply isn’t universally true.

We’ve been designing with a German cabinet line that has been using 5/8 particle board for decades. Our clients are the sort that don’t pay top dollar for an inferior product.  There are tens of thousands of these kitchens stateside with stone and concrete tops - some hanging from the wall.  None to my knowledge have suffered breakage in everyday use. It all depends on the design and material quality.  Now , if a forklift runs into them on a loading dock........

One can by crap particle board or crap hardwood just as easily.

Ace, I don’t get your initial hesitation.  Even if there was blowout ,  the shelves conceal the mortise hole anyway.
