Hello Hello Hello!

Well I have a few project/jobs on the go and I thought ill start posting some of them! So I have more pictures of other jobs to come!  But first the Dormer! It aint finished yet!

Brick layer is coming 2 moro he said he will be finished 2 moro!

Any way!  I had to get planning of course and the architect did a drawing!  Well the Dormer was passed but the architect did not listen to a word I told him he just did what he wanted! So he was sacked and I wont be using him again! haahaa!

Any way now the drawings are in the rubbish bin! ! I decided to build it how I think was best!

I said I wanted the Dormer to match the building! The building has all gable ends above the windows and on the ends of the building!  I told the architect thats how I want the Dormer!  I also said I wanted it to be built with bricks!  No LEAD and No plastic cladding looks Rubbish!

So what did I get!    He drew a Dormer with TWO hips! and he said you could either clad it with plastic boards with wood affect or lead!  The complete opposite to what I said!

I dont agree with building brick work on wood! So I had to get some steel in for the brick work to sit on!    So I measured up and ordered some steel I made them a little bigger than they should be I think because I am not a structural engineer so I rather be save than sorry!

Any way PICTURES!

Here you can see the Veluxes which where leaking so Instead of replacing them decided to build a Dormer to create more room!

I removed all the plaster Board so I could see what was going on and decide how to tackle the job. I also Propped the Roof with my new acro props!  (I should of add pictures of my 12 acro props to JMB's NEW Toys  [big grin])

Ripped out the veluxes and the two rafter in between and removed some tiles so I could get an idea of how big I wanted the dormer to be to make it look in proportion and also to give as much room inside.

I then got the steel! I ordered 3 steels!  One for the top and two to go down the side of the rafters.    The one for the Top I decided to have it as a T beam instead of a I Beam.  Because a I-beam would have to sit underneath creating a bulk head which is my pet hate!  So I decided for me to be able to create a flush ceiling I would have to some how get the steel inside the rafters!
[attachimg=#]

I used my Fein to cut the birds mouths and the slot above so sorry its a little wobbly!  I also used my Arbotech Allsaw to cut the bricks/blocks and I was able to cut a slot through the blocks aswell behind the rafters

Me and my mate lifted the Steel in! Man it was awkward to get it up there! lol  Any way you can see fits lovely!

Wrong Order by the way!  I first put the TOP Steel in then Ripped out the Veluxes! Not like it maters just letting you know! I cant be bothered to delete and rearrange everything sorry!

You are going to put a pad stone under the steel yea ?

I take it this is your own house ?  I don't know if i would be as brave to go ahead without an engineers report or final drawings  [poke]

That cut going nearly all the way through the rafter, did you get advise on this ?

Nice project though, good to get your teeth into something like this, more pics please  ;D

Now I removed Veluxes and ripped everything out  [embarassed]   You can see the steel in place and how it sits just above the ceiling perfect!

That is a pad stone whats under the steel now I dont get what your saying?  That aint a normal concrete block thats a load bearing pad but it was to big so I cut it down.

Advise for cutting through?  I could cut right through makes no difference dude.  I only left that inch on because 1 no need to cut right through 2 I didnt want to accidentally cut the felt.  The steel is holding both sides one sits on the flange on the left and the other is birds mouth siting on the right flange.    Their is another steel bellow which with birds mouths also another 3rd steel near to top of the ridge birds mouth! ALSO these are Trusses which are as you know alway tied from one side to another so the floor keeps to roof together.  So I would say the roof aint going no where.  Ill do a drawing to show how it all looks!

I take it you dont do alot of roofs WoodGuy  [poke] [poke]

Starting the timber structure of the Dormer!

Cover it up cus it was the end off the day and it was looking like it was going to rain!

I was happy enough to work from my Tower Scaffold but for doing the brick work it would be alot better safer easier to have a platform so set up some more scaffolding to have a nice working area.

I was doing hand cut roofs when you was still in nappies.  I posted the pad stone thing after you put the pictures up, you beat me to it.  I can see you have it in.  I do realise that the rafters are sitting on a flange on either side, just wondered if someone suggested this to you or was it your own idea !!

Don't really do roofs anymore, Ive moved on  [tongue]

I was kidding!   No all my idea I have asked for no advise at all I have done the entire thing on my own even telling the bricklayers what to do! haahaa!  No seriously I came up with the  T-beam idea just a simple solution I have always thought why do people always use I-beams if you can get away with a T-beam but it seems the norm if you have  a steel have a I-beam I know they are stronger.  I have in the past notched floor joist to get the steel flush when removing a wall so the I-beam doesnt sit under the floor joist and it was a lot of hard work and I always said to the Forman why just not get a T-beam and beef it up as the steel was just holding floor joists up not a wall above but I was ignored!   So Ill use it on my own jobs!

Brick work looks nice.  What seals the junction between the brick & the roof if there is to be no lead ?

I forgot to show the Inside and the two other steels!  Which is what the bricks are sitting on!  Sorry!

Two steels running with the rafters they are bolted into the rafters and sit on the top and bottom steel!   I have birds mouthed the steel over the other steel!  [big grin]  and at the bottom I have welded to angle plates which where the of cuts of the steels.   I know I know my welding doesnt look pretty! Plus I dont fully turst it so I am going to bolt through them as a extra precaution! also I am going to weld the birds mouth on the steel and some more plates will be welded and/or bolted at the top!

Haaahaa funny little scot!  Of course der will be flashing!  I just hate when its covered in lead all over!  I like flashing I like doing it makes a change from joinery!  Got the brick layers to remove the mortar joint saves me grinding!  If you look you can see in the pictures where the joints have been racked out.  Also the gutter brackets have been bedded in saving me drilling them in!

Thought you said at the begining that you didnt want lead ?  Funny little scot  [ban] ::)
