DTS / RTS 400 REQ - Can The Pads Be Swapped?

So Im considering adding a DTS 400 REQ to the collection and thought I remembered reading that with the RE versions, specifically the RTS 400 RE the sanding platen / pad could be swapped from the rectangular one for the delta one from the DTS 400 RE. Is that still true with the new REQ versions? And if so can either use the others sanding pad? Or is it just one can use both and not the other. And what are the part numbers for the pads for the REQ versions?

Whichever route I go I would love the ability to use both the Delta and the Rectangular pads if thats still an option in the REQ versions.

Huh, well it looks like Highland Woodworking state:

Note: The DTS 400 & RTS 400 sanders are similar, but the pads are not interchangeable.

There has been discussion about this topic many times. It used to be possible with the old models, circa mid-2000s.

I looked at the parts list for the new REQ models when they were first announced and there are only a couple of parts that are different. I think Festool ultimately said it's a no go. I would trust they know best.

Darn. Thanks Shane. Now I have to think about which I would get more use out of.... Decisions decisions.

I personally prefer the DTS. I can do everything the RTS can, plus can get into even tighter spots with the delta-shape pad.

Abrasives are a hair cheaper for the RTS. And, they will fit the LS 130 if it's in your future.

Example: 120 grit, box of 100: $43 RTS vs $46 DTS

More to Shane's suggestion...Besides fitting the RTS and LS130, the 80mm X 130mm rectangular abrasives fit the 496962 Hand Sanding Block and 495967 Festool HSK Rectangular Sanding Block (Hard)

That is an interesting point. Ive been researching since I started this thread yesterday and Im finding its like trying to choose between the ETS EC 125/3 and the 150/3. I ended up going with the ETS EC 150/3 but that was before I found out the ETS EC 125/3 will take the 150 pads. That definitely would have affected my decision as I like the idea of sharing sandpapers with as many machines as possible. I wish Festool would have made the DTS and RTS able to interchange the pads instead of forcing us to decide.

You don't need to decide,  your Festool-Dealer will be more than happy to supply one of each  [big grin] [big grin] [big grin]

[tongue]  [wink]

Kind regards,
Oliver

lol I know! Thats the problem, they want to sell us BOTH! I only want to spend the money for one. Just thinking about a compliment to my ETS EC 150/3 and Pro 5.

Nice mention about that too, Scott.

Hi All,

Let me know if I am off my rocker.  I have the RTS 400 EQ.  I bought the DTS 400 REQ a couple of weeks ago.  I bought the LS130 last week (for a stair refinish project- Scott Burt says it is the stair master !).  I am so happy with the new DTS 400 I am selling my old RTS and buying the new one.  I use the RTS a lot, so I think I can justify the new model (25% more power).

I got some overspray on the old RTS.  I am going to do a much better job of keeping my new sanders free of paint.  I promise.

Brian, you're not off your rocker, You've just discovered how eminently usefull each of Festool's sanders function.  I inherited my old RTS, DTS, and ETS to my kids and bought the new models.  I also bought the new ECs, the 150/5 used, and the 125/3 new.  I felt that I deserved the new ones as the ETS150/5 that I owned was also bought well used.  I own and use all the Festool sanders excepting the RO150 (have the Bosch) and the RS2 (have the Makita).

[member=77608]GastonL[/member] Nice. How well does it work with PLA? I've been finding that PLA and PLA+ are not very structural. Made a dust collector base for my Makita trim router, it broke off in just a few moments. The 150mm half moon to hold the sander didn't make it through the night holding the GET75.

No problems yet with PLA. But you can also print it in ABS or another material. I thought that plastics used for tools contain glass fibre, so maybe a PLA-gf or PETG-gf is good filament to use.

If something fails, my guess is that the threads for the bolts are the first to become loose, because they are printed too. If so, I will use threaded inserts.
