Is anyone using this inline sander with custom shaped pads or stock pads to sand moldings? I bought the PC detail sander a long time ago and found it to be useless, than got the att. for the Fien detail sander ( not much better ). Am hoping the Festool will work without long paper changes and quickly eating up paper.

David,

Hi & Welcome to the FOG,

I have owned the PC, Bosch, & Fein detail sanders.  The Bosch & Fein are delta pad models similar in design to the Festool 93, however the comparison ends there.  There is no comparison  to the sanding aggressiveness, or finished quality of all three to the Festool DX 93.  But that's not your question...

I also own 2 of the LS 130's with all the pads except the custom pad (haven't had the need to get a custom pad set yet...).  Because of the lineal motion mirrors the hand they are wonderfully suited for moldings.  Since in some applications both in convex or concave the sanding surface only contacts the work on narrow lineal strips, by moving the hook & loop paper so a new strip contacts the surface I get lots of use out of a single sheet.  And the paper & the pad stay put!!!  This is a complete different experience to the PC's design where the paper peels off & the block falls out!!

I have also used the scraper attachment to quickly remove linoleum.  I was very surprised,  as was the two other guys who had been on the knees for a hour with a chisel & scrapers what the LS 130 did in minutes....

I, too, have an LS 130 and think it is great.  It is perfect for all kinds of shapes - which is what it is touted for, and... it also will work, using fine sand paper, to get places where other sanders won't fit.

I don't think it uses much paper at all.  And it does stay put.  I've never made a custom shape, but I do have all the existing pads and they all work the same.

I think you'll be happy with it.

I think it is a nice sander...I've been trying to pull the trigger for a long time.  Now that I know it has a scraper attachment it looks even better.

I like my LS130 for what it was designed to do. Only complaint is it's noisy. Noisiest sander I have. Are others experiencing the same? Do wish it had a larger selection of standard profiles.

Would this be the right tool for sanding the profiles on Cedar T&G boards? I am prefinishing them before assemble and need to sand them to 120 before applying my oil stain and then to 220 between coats.

Thanks, Randy

jim and clintholeman thanks for your input, I've been using Festool for about 5yrs. and have been inpressed with every one one of them. I do small runs of moldings on a W+H molder and hand sanding has gotten old. Have also looked at the Dynabrade inline air sander, which has a a kit available to make molds of your profile. How good is dust collection? thanks again,

Les,

I am so used to the sander that I don't notice the sound level, but it does have a sound unique to the sander.

Denverdad,

I use this sander for preparing the "vee" grove on a Bruce hardwood floor, some 1,000 plus sq ft floor.  This job alone saved me hours & from my perspective paid for the sander.

How good is the dust collection?  Well it's a function of how well the profile matches the work.  For example the RO 150's flat pad fully on the surface of a flat top does nearly 100%, but hang 1/2 the pad over an edge & the % drops substantially...  Same is true with the LS 130.  Using the example of the "vee" grove on the floor preparation job where only the tip on the point of the pad was in contact with the  surface, the dust collection was maybe 50%.  Did I care.....  Hell NO!!!  The sander saved me tons of time & was easy on my hands.  So what if it didn't collect all the dust & the paper clogged my be a little earlier....  I  was able to get multiple uses out of a single sheet 'cause the contact area was small.  I probably didn't go thru a 10 sheets on the whole floor 'cause each sheet had a 1/2 doz. plus strips.

By the way the LS 130 uses the same paper as the RS 400.

Hey Guys,
The LS 130 EQ, is likely my next purchase, I would like to know if anyone has the SSH-STF-LS130 Kit.
this is another mystery Festool product, and I would like to know how it works and if it is worth buying?
I know its only 40 clams, but I don't want to add to the dud pile ;)
Come on Festool start releasing some info on this kinda stuff... whats the big secret anyway.

If you have a non-standard profile or shape to sand then this kit is worth its weight in gold.

The kit consists of a bare foam sanding block, a rough abrasive sheet, a hook and loop sheet and some adhesive.

Select the profile/shape you wish to copy and stick the abrasive sheet directly on to it, making sure that you press it firmly into the profile. Then, with the bare foam pad mounted onto the LS130, 'sand' the abrasive that you have fixed onto the profile. The linear action sands the foam pad down to the profile shape. Once you are satisfied that the fit is good and the foam pad replicates the profile, stick the hook and loop sheet onto the foam pad. Wait for the adhesive to dry and you then have a sanding pad ready to take the normal size LS130 sanding sheets.

It is simple to do and really works. The LS130 is probably my favourite Festool....after the big K!

Plus it allowed me to throw away my worst ever tool purchase, a Porter Cable inline sanding kit.

Dust collection on the LS 130 is excellent.  I just wipe down the pieces after sanding with a dry tack cloth and apply finish.  My shop is small so dust collection is a must.  No problem at all.

I understand about the noise.  It is a different noise, not sure it is louder, but it is different.  I wear ear plugs and sould suppressors when I'm sanding [actually most of the time], and it doesn't bother me at all.

It may become one of your favorite tools.

Mirko,

I think Per Swenson wrote a very positive report on how to make and use the custom profiling kit - which he used to sand some moldings in a restoration project.
