Edgebanding Matt Melamine

Hi everyone
I've been using the ka65 conturo on melamine covered chip board without issues...

This is my process: apply 1mm pvc edge banding, trim ends, remove excess edgebanding above face of sheet with a hand blade tool (found it better than the 1.5 deg router), use scraper to round 1mm and remove excess glue/edging, sand with 320 and block then a little polish and it looks spectacular...

However, now that I'm doing matt melamine and matt edgebanding, any hint of sanding or scraper or super fine sanding shows up immediately and I can't just add a little polish and blend like the normal melamine.

Does anyone have any experience with matt melamine? And is willing to share any hints and tips please?

Thanks
Clauds

I don’t have experience with the edge banding, but I have used stainless steel shim stock to protect the surface when trimming through dowels.

The shim stock has a hard temper and you can get it as thin as 0.001”.  I don’t recall what thickness I used but probably something in the range of 0.003” to 0.005”.

I think Grainger carries the stuff.  You would have to tape it in place and trim.  I don’t know what thickness would leave an acceptable overhang.  You would have to experiment.  The thin stuff gets a bit delicate, but can be cut by scoring with a sharp utility knife and snapping.

I don’t know if this will produce acceptable results.  So if someone else has an approach, I would try it first.

Note:  I use a 2” wide chisel to trim my edge banding. It takes and holds a good edge and an Arkansas stone makes quick work of dressing the edge.  It takes a little practice, but ends up being quicker and easier than anything else I have tried.

Thank you for the advice...
I've been experimenting and have come up with a solution.
Basically I set the MFK 700 to absolute perfection so it just kisses the face and leaves no step, followed by the round over tool HW R1 D28 Kl OFK and leave it there... Looks fantastic and less work.. Might try it this way on the standard melamine too ;)
