Embed YouTube Videos - Yes or No?

Should members be able to embed YouTube videos in their posts?

Hi Everyone,
I can install a new feature in the forum which would allow members to post YouTube videos in their posts.  The video would appear like a photo, right inside the message.

There are several interesting videos on YouTube featuring Festool tools, and I'd like to have a way to share them easily here in the forum.

So I'm curious to know if members would like to have this installed in the forum.

Vote!

Matthew,

So this would be a link to a YouTube video file, rather than embedding the file, right?

Ned, I think he means embedded, the video would play right in the post.

Yes, the video would play right in your post.

You would see the icon for the video.  If you hit the "play" button, the video starts.  If you don't hit "play," you would just see the icon.  Exactly the same as if you were on YouTube, except you can comment on it and make it part of a discussion.

I don't think this option would be used all the time.  But when you want to include a good video, I think this would be a nice option.

Hi,

Yes, but only if it does not slow down opening pages and posts.

In my tests, I have not found that it slows the messages down.  Also, it does not use forum bandwidth -- only YouTube.

One of the interesting things is that you get the full functionality of YouTube videos right in the message -- the video itself, volume controls, and a list of all "related" videos or videos by the same person.  A very neat little idea.

OK, I take this as a Yes to my earlier question.  While the YouTube video may appear to be "embedded" in a post, that is, it plays within the post rather than opening another browser window, the file containing the video is not part of the post, or even stored on the FOG server.  As I said, it's a link, though it behaves a bit differently than the most common kind of link.

If this is true, anyone on a slow connection would pay the price for the video only if he chooses to view it.

In that case, yeah, let's allow video.

Ned,
Yes, what you said is correct.  The YouTube video appears in the post, but all the resources needed to play it are housed on YouTube, not the forum.  But for all practical purposes, it's as if the video is part of the forum.  We get the benefit of seeing the videos here, without the costs.

To answer your other point -- yes, the video plays inside the post.  It does not open a separate window.

My inclination is to install this and give people a chance to play around with it, to see what it's like.  But I wanted to make sure there was enough interest in it first.

Thanks,
Matthew

Looks like we're getting a strong "yes" vote on this!
Those of you who voted "no" -- I'd be curious to hear what your objections are.  It's important.
Thanks,
Matthew

Matthew, I don't see a down side to this, am I missing something?

Brice,
I don't see a downside to it either.  But one of my reasons for doing this poll was to hear if there was enough support or interest in having it.  Looks like we are there.

Here is a Utube vid to have a gander at (dail up users beware--- its only a bit of light hearted fun ;D )

;D ;D

Hopefully the video files will only pertain to woodworking subject matter!

Yes, we would expect that the videos would have the same criteria as the other posts in the forum.

The reason I voted NO is readily seen if you download the "Festool Party" in the group of samples that Tezzer gave us.
A total waste of 6 or 7 minutes to load. then 1:29 to watch WHAT? I am just afraid that at dial-up speeds too much time will be spent loading "funny" comics.

Mr Ross,

I understand your frustration. But honestly, if you are still on dial-up, videos are not for you.  :(

David,

I think it's very reasonable to require a description be included to help avoided wasted bandwidth.  That said, if you have limited internet bandwidth, it's probably not a good idea to download videos anyway.

Regards,

Dan.

Sorry Dave :-\ ill make sure i keep any funny business to my self. Well i thought it was great not to mention a lot of creative effort by a fellow Festoolian.  ;D

I did feel sorry for the poor old Belt Sander living in the cupboard by him self :-[ I wonder why he has been banished from his systainer ???
