Engraving question

Hey gang.  I have a bookshelf that I have been commissioned for by the bosses (wifey and 2month old daughter) and it started out simple enough. Basic design... white paint with some decorative moldings painted to match but alas, that isn’t the idea de jour.

Now it involves a monogram and some engraving that needs to be filled black whilst the rest is still white. I have used my Shaper to do this before but it was always black inlay and natural or stained wood which I sand off the “overspray” and seal away.

I have been racking my brain, figured I would reach out to my brethren (and sisterhood) to see what they can preach.

Look up the ‘ultimate vertical workstation’

He did it with a sharpie.

I was thinking today it might work also to cover the workpiece in masking tape, then do the cut / engrave, and spray. Not sure how clean the tape would cut away though.

In my area, there are people with CNC wood cutting machines who will take a sketch, clean it up, program their machine, and engrave your wood. Would that work?

So I feel now like I didn’t do a good job of explaining things.

1) I have a Shaper Origin and plenty of tools to do the work, I just need ideas on how to approach this.

2) The final workpiece will be painted white (ProClassic) with the engraved areas (monogram + accents) painted black.

Again, in other engravings, I had the luxury of just sanding the wood and sealing it. Since this is to be painted white, I wasn’t sure what works best. Off the top of my head, I would:

~paint the workpiece
~engrave (I feel like this will not work out as I would expect)
~paint engraving black and clean up any “overspray” off of the white proclassic paint

Paint white, allow to fully coalesce, apply self adhesive hardwood floor protector, engrave, spray.

Hopefully this will work.....

Like Tom says, but use Oramask. This is exactly it's intended purpose. Paint your panel white, let it cure fully. Apply Oramask and route whatever you want. Paint the carved bits. Peel away Oramask. Drink frosty beverage and enjoy your work.
