Notice that the white rubber around the sanding pad had black specs on it.  When I rubbed on it, it smeared like oil.  I took the pad off, cleaned it around where the pad fits to sander, tightened it and when I started it up it threw a little bit of black specs on my table.  It's not bad and stopped throwing little bits out, but the white rubber around pad is getting dirty from it again.  Any suggestions.  Been experimenting with small boards of poplar and soft maple to learn to sand and stain.  Appreciate any suggestions on what might be causing this.

Fergy,

Are the spots wet?  If not, then I think that you are seeing sawdust that has built up on the top of the pad come off -- I have experienced this using the hard pad and it is not a big deal.  It almost looks like black soot when coming off.  If you are unsure, then give the fine folks at Festool Service a call.  Good luck!

It sounds to me to be the brake pad wearing in.  Keep using it and see if it stops doing it after a few more hours.
