Festool 8mm shank size

It seems logical that a larger shank would give you a nicer cut due to the centrifugal force created by weight of the cutter. As far as festool routers I have the 1010 and just testing its capabilities

I really like this size shank but unfortunately it is hard to come by in the states.  Festool has a few bits, but it discontinued its profile bits a few years ago.  Fortunately I stocked up on several profiles before they all disappeared.  If you can find them they are better than 1/4 inch shank bits.

If your looking for Bits in 8mm check CMT.  They have a large assortment.

Mafell also uses 8mm in there Dual Dowler.

And, deflection decreases in proportion to the cube of the diameter, so the small increase in the diameter from 1/4" to 8mm gives a pretty nice increase in stiffness.

Lee Valley has a large assortment of 8mm bits that you can order on line and they are excellent quality
