Festool accessory frustration

I love my Festools. They have changed forever the way I work and the quality of the work. What more can you say about a tool.

I do have an issue I hope they address and it would boost their sales. Please add a line or two and perhaps a video of how to use the accessories and why I would want them. For example I googled the interwebby thing to try to see th FS-Rapid Quick-Action Clamp in use to see if I would benefit from using it. No luck. The product description is of little value. If all you are going to tell me is "For clamping and positioning with Festool guide rails. Includes fixed jaws and clamping jaws" then why wast the ink or web space. Hey this item is $45 maybe it is a real time saver, maybe it is useless but with this description I have no idea if it is better than what I already have.

The Angle Unit is another example. This forum has plenty of posts about how to use it fix it and why it does not work well then I read one post where someone was at a trade show and the guy from Festool told him most people use it wrong and that it is meant as a guide to place the rail in the correct position and then removed before the cut is made. (Paraphrased from my poor memory) My Point is a short instructional video of how to use some of these things and how they make things work better would help me and others make a purchase decision. As it stands now I have to search to find someone who has the accessory and has figured out how it was intended to be used.

Now before you think that a good carpenter should be able to figure this stuff out go look at all the posts for the angle unit. I read a bunch of them from seasoned pros and none of them were using it the way Festool told the guy at the trade show.

You can go through the accessories for almost every tool  and see that there is very little in the way of product description or even how the accessory is to be used and why you would want to use it.

This would not be a great expense for Festool and should result in increases customer satisfaction and increased sales. I hope they listen. Festool makes great products this is just something I would like to see them improve.

Joe, sorry for the frustration. We are in the process of creating videos demonstrating accessories and have done so for dozens already. However, there are probably around 600+ accessories, excluding sandpapers. So, it's not something that's going to happen overnight. But, please know that we are working on it.

Here are some examples, visit http://festool.tv for more.

Festool Industrial Cleaning Set (454770)

Festool Sanding Pads

5-Piece Festool Zobo Forstner-Style Bit Set

Festool Long Life Filter Bag (496120 and 496121)

Fastfix Depth Stop Chuck - 493539

I think you can learn a lot from the FOG and the Festool-related videos on youtube. In fact, you will probably learn more than any manual can teach, because users will always come up with novel techniques that increase the usefulness of the tool or accessory.

After all, the manual will never tell you the angle unit is rubbish...

...'nuff said!

I think that's why Festool invested in running FOG so that any questions like this can be answered by people who use them on a daily basis.  While I value content from Festool, tips and tricks I have learned through contents contributed by people on this Forum has been the extra advantage of purchasing Festool above and beyond the well engineered and manufactured tools.

I blame Paul Marcel for setting such a high bar on expectation of user created video tips.

Thanks for the link Shane, I enjoyed those videos. Tell the boyz in the video department to get busy and make a bunch more.

Richard I agree that the angle unit sure is not what I thought it was. I did learn that if I set it to the angle I want and use it to place the track where it needs to be then remove it and make my cut it works ok. It appears to me that it was nevr meant to be an item that you could attach to the rail and set it and forget it. That would be nice.

I blame everything I can on Paul-Marcel. That guy sure has cost me a lot of money.

Wow, thanks for the compliments, mparka and uncle Joe...  guess I can't slack off now on the next RAS-115 review!

I share Uncle Joe's frustration with the accessory marketing.  (and he is right to blame Paul Marcel for our thin wallets).  The product names seem to be the google translate of the original German.  Just about everything is a "stop" though few of those are what English speakers would call stops.  The videos are great, but it seems that an English major could explain why we need the parallel guides or the MFS in a paragraph or two.

With greatest respect for the Festool staff, why not consider an English major or a journalism major summer intern to rewrite the product titles and descriptions?  I think the minimal investment would have a huge payoff.

Paul Marcel is the reason my children are hungry and my dog is eating it's own tail !!!

Its not the rewriting costs..... its the printing in different languages that is the problem its the same with most stuff you buy these days

no words just stupid pictorials.

Pictorial instructions reminded me of this fine cartoon:

wow, this link needs to be on the festoolusa.com page somewhere and easily stumbled over. under support or about or both!

Most, if not all, of those videos already exist on the respective product pages of the site. But, I will be rolling out some vast improvements to the site soon that will make this and other content more accessible and easier to find for all.
