I am intrigued by the new Festool angle grinder, but, other than steel work, how would one use the tool?

If you don't have a RAS, presumably it can be used for wood sculpting with a Kutzall disc or something similar.  I assume there's an attachment for it to mount sandpaper as well, like there is for other angle grinders?

Variable speed and dusty protection mean it'll make a good cordless Sander for certain tasks :)

Surface concrete so it’s smooth if you want to cap it with stone.

I use my Milwaukee 18 volt with a .040” thick cut-off wheel to cut bolts and screws to unusual lengths.

Curious [member=44099]Cheese[/member] why you use the thicker cut off wheel for this? Does this give better control?

Maybe you misread? I don’t know of a thinner wheel other than some small diameter disks for Dremel.

Wonder if Festool is going to allow Bluetooth vac/start with this potential spark throwing tool?

Would need the spark trap for the vac; I don't think they make it anymore :/ could be wrong

The one I normally use is 1/16

Ya, years in the past, the thinnest cutoff wheel available was .125”, then the standard became .080”, then .060” and finally .040”. If there was a thinner option available... I’d be the first adopter.

The .040” thick wheel on a 4”-5” grinder will cut through a 5/16” diameter stainless bolt within 4-5 seconds.
It just doesn’t get much better than that from a convenience stand point. Hit it with a burr trimmer and you’re good to go.

I use my right angle grinders with a wire brush, flap and hard sanding discs and with a cutoff disc.  I have a Makita cordless as well as a Dewalt Cordless - both 4 1/2" with 5/8" arbors.  One on my farm in Arkansas, one in Chicago - based on local battery / accessory availability in each location.

They are great tools.  I'm amazed at how much I use them.

- awesome for metal work - knocking down welds quickly, truing up cut edges, chamfering edges before welding, cutting bolts, nails, sheet, angle iron, tubing, conduit, etc.
- rust removal / scale removal / paint removal on steel
- sharpening lawnmower blades, axes, etc
- very fast wood removal with a 36 or 40 grit flap sander

Neither the Dewalt nor the Makita have a dust collection port.  I'm excited to see the Festool does.  And neither of them are variable speed like the FT.

As a caution, DO NOT use one of these without a guard in place.  AND the side handle.  They WILL grab the work and kick back and could do serious damage to an arm, stomach, or leg with an exposed wheel, brush, or sander.  Unlike an orbital these bite and don't give!  Think ROTEX Mode full on!  Ideally wear a leather apron as well.  With metal they generate a lot of sparks.  Eye protection a must.

They are messy, but amazing tools for rapid stock removal.

Maybe I'm missing something but where exactly is there any mention of this tool having a dust port?

Ya Neil brings up another great use...put a wire brush on for rust removal and a Pferd poly disc on for lawn mower blade and SHOVEL sharpening.

Hi
Two 18v machines are due for release in Europe - Diamond grinder with dust port DSC AGC 125 18v. Applications such as cutting concrete , roof tiles etc
.....and AGC 125 18v standard style grinder - Applications such as re-bar, threaded rod, galvanised profiles......list is endless

Will there be a dust port similar to the old DSG-AG 125 (making it suitable for sanding), or is the dust port for concrete cutting style of operation.
Could be a viable replacement for the RAS line of products.

Is a burr trimmer a thing?
