You might be able to do something similar with chalk, depending on what was happening on either piece?  The transfer sort of applies both ways.

I remember my dentist using a thin blue chalk bite strip when they were installing and shaping a crown a bunch of years ago.  Which I suppose is a little bit more akin to flattening a large slab, but a similar principle nonetheless.

A few weeks ago I had to install a couple of locks on the drawers of a bathroom vanity, because the couple wanted to rent out their house for Bed & Breakfast while they went on holiday themselves and lock her make-up away. Space was very limited in the cramped bathroom, and after installing the push lock in the side of the vanity, I had no way determine where the pin of the lock touched the drawer when it was closed. So I used some lipstick I found in the drawer, she had an ample supply, and coated the pin with it. Then with the drawer closed I could push the pin down so the location would be marked by the lipstick. Lipstick indeed comes in handy sometimes.
