What would be the necessary size bits to use for general use?  Also, I noticed the Festool Domino 500 comes with a bit.  What is the min and max tenon sizes that can be used with the bit?  Please let me know if you have a chance.
Thank you.

I use the 5mm and 6mm bits the most, since most joinery is 3/4" material.

However, the 4mm is also very useful for Domino'ing miter corners, and joining 1/2" materials.
The above should hold most people for a while/forever.

Eventually, I had a project with thicker material so at that time I bought the 8mm bit and some tenons.

So at this point I have them all, minus the 10mm!

The 5mm bit is my most commonly used size, and indeed that is the bit size that comes with the domino. Recently I have started using the 4mm tenon for aligning panels in a glue-up, one of my preferred domino applications. The panels go together much more easily than with 5mm tenons, and the alignment is just as good.

For tenoning legs and aprons, I prefer the thicker 8 and 10mm tenons.

At one time or another, they'll all come in useful which is why the tenon systainer is good value.

The bit size matches the tenon thickness and can only be used for that thickness. The 8mm bit has two tenon lengths available and is use for both of those.

5mm and 6mm are my most used. But going with the tenon/bit assortment is a very good way to start.

Good advice above to go with the assortment.  You save some money and sooner or later you may need all the sizes, and you will have them when the need comes.  Like most posts above, I use mostly 5 & 6, but I have used some of each size - who knows what the next project will need?

Hi Patrick

Bob Marino's advice is right - get the domino kit - I did and it saved me some money too. I use all the sizes and would hate to be stuck with just the original 5mm cutter. You can also make up dominos of your own length and width. Take a look at my 'Domino Extras' videos and also my recent Table Project videos for some variations.

Good luck.

Hello Patrick,  I have the both Domino's and the Domino Kit assortments and I use the 8mm for most of my work building furniture.

However, I use all of the Domino cutters for both machines depending on the build I'm working on and in the case of some furniture I use several of the sizes.  If I was only doing plywood case work, I think the 6mm would be most useful.  The 4mm cutter is great for small work and in drawer blades I have cut stacked 4mm joints.

definitely get the kit! I tend to use the 8mm bit a lot. I built a door last summer and for that I used the 10mm bit. It went together sweet.  I look for projects to use the domino on, it's just so darned fun to use :)

Thank you all for the suggestions.  So far my experience with the Domino has been GREAT!  I LOVE IT!  I will take the advice and purchase the bit assortment.  Thanks for the note on which ones you use and how often.
