Festool ES150/5

I am considering the puchase of the ES150/5.
Are the sanding discs proprietary or will other brands fit that sander?

Welcome to the forum. There are other manufacturers who offer abrasives with the Festool hole pattern. Some of the other forum members can weigh in since I'm not familiar with what's out there. However, I think many customers will attest to the fact that our abrasives are competitively priced and outlast other brands.

Any 6 inch paper will fit, but you will need to use Festool paper if you want the holes to line up.

Not true. There are other manufacturers that offer paper with the same hole pattern.

I think that klingspor and maybe mirka offer paper with the hole pattern.

Any 6" Hook and Loop paper will work however the Festool hole pattern is designed to collect the dust in an efficient manner

THe biggest advantage to using the proper abrasive is a cooler running pad which prevents melting of the hook and loop pads and also less chance of swirl marks and the loose grit, dust and other particles get cleared from the area between the sandpaper and the work surface.

Most people automatically think Festool paper is expensive but the price is very competitive with other manufacturers or at least it is up here in Canada

[2cents] A professional cabinet maker friend of mine uses nothing but Abranet on his 150/5 with great results.  At his suggestion I recently started using it and while it's not cheap, it lasts a lot longer than the Rubin disc's that I had been using, so the actual price works out to be about the same / maybe a bit lower.

Dust collection, I believe, is superior to a 9 hole disc because Abranet is made from a screen type material with an abrasive surface and a hook and loop backing.

I would agree with you about the Abranet, with one caveat.  The mesh lets dust bombard the sanding pad and that shorten its life.
