Festool on This Old House

Watched This Old House last night that I TIVOed from Sat.  Tom Silva used his ATF 55 and long guide rail to make two cuts into a floor for an inlay.  Very nice job.  Great to see Festool on TV.

New member and first post... hello everyone.

I saw that episode and him hit the nail... I noticed they did not mention it at all.  I wonder what type of blade he was using.

I have also noticed that Tom and all the other guys tend to use the Fes screw gun quite a bit.  I wonder if it is product placement or if they really like them.

Tom and the gang were impressed (to say the least!!) with the tools. It wasn't salesmanship, it was the quality of the tools themselves that sold them.

Hitting a nail shouldn't really be a problem (not something you want to do all the time).  There is a chance of chipping your blade but slight.  TC is used all the time to cut through metal.  I have a dewalt DW872 Multi Cutter, it's basically a chop saw with a carbide tipped blade rather than an abrasive disc.  Cuts through 4" x 1/4"wall square tubing very quickly and very cleanly.  I made many gates and racks with this unit and have yet to change the blade.

Norm might get the Domino for his own personal use, but I doubt we'll ever see him use it on his show. I was watching the other day and he was back to using a PC biscuit joiner instead of his Lamello. He uses what the sponsors want him to use obviously. Unless Festool becomes a sponsor, I don't think we'll ever see any Festool stuff on his show. It could be worse, Home Depot could be one of his sponsors and then we'd have to watch Norm use nothing but Ryobi and Black and Decker tools.

Now the girl on that DIY show (sorry, can't think of the name right now), will probably have one as soon as it comes out, if she doesn't already have one. David Marks would probably have one if he was still making new shows for DIY. That guy used loose tenons for everything.

That "girl" is Amy Devers  and clearly a friend to the Festool main office. She assisted with their IWF exhibit and had a shop full of Systainers.

I have this poster right next to my Norm poster. I wonder if either one of them has my poster.

The first tool I purchased was the circular saw and vacuum combination.  That impressed me so much that I bought the six inch Rotex sander.  That impressed me enough that I bought a whole lot more.  Also, when I demonstrate Festool to folks (as I have done quite a number of times), those are the three tools that seem to impress them the most.

I talked to Tom Silva last year when he came into the local Woodcraft store (where I was working) to pick up a couple Festool accessories. I asked him about the tools I see him using on the show, of course, and how he came to use them. He said that Festool asked him if he'd like to try out the tools. Sure, he said. Within a couple days, he had a big delivery of tools (I don't recall exactly what, but I believe it was almost everything they offer here in the US). When Festool asked if the package was sufficient, he said (I paraphrase here) "This doesn't help me. I've got 4 crews!" The next day, he had 3 additional sets of Festools.  Whether this was a "donation" or he ended up paying for them, I do not know, but he did say they were excellent and uses them now almost exclusively.

My wife and I both regularly watch This Old House episodes and also catch Amy Devers' Freeform Furniture show from time to time.  My wife is now getting pretty good at noticing that beautiful black and green color combo we all know and love when tools are being used.  I tell her "see honey, why should I buy anything else if this is what these all talented professionals you like so well use?"  I'm not sure it's working but it's worth a try.

I get the feeling that Festool is like a few other of my interests: The users end up being product demonstrators, salesmen, and unpaid factory reps. Of course, when you discover something is designed this well, it's kind of hard to not evangelize a bit.

It also helps to keep the "what'd this nutball buy this time?" comments away.

Most people would think it's odd to take photos of your bbq pit/grill, the food before, during, and after cooking, and to invite strangers from the internet over to your house to see it and to cook for them.

Somehow, I bet you folks find that perfectly normal.  ;D
