Yes, I bought one. I am curious though, how you choose which oil to use. I see one is less durable good for shelves and such. I see one is for High use, traffic, applications and one is outdoors. Are all of them food safe, are any of them food safe, and is the outdoor one as durable as the heavy-duty indoor one used for tabletops or cutting boards? I assume the Heavey duty indoor oil is food safe since I have seen it mentioned for use on cutting boards. I am interested in a bigger just but don't really want all three types on hand. Ideally, the outdoor oil is as durable and food safe then it would be my got to if not I'll have to have two oils. I am not interested in the light-duty oil. I would rather use the heavy-duty instead. Thanks for any guidance. My current project a tabletop may or may not get oil. I may wind up using two-part epoxy. Thanks again!

I made up my own Surfix Systainer to use with a RO 125. I purchased just the items I needed and went from there. I regularly use 751 One Step and 752 Outdoor. I also keep 10-packs of Granat 150 & 240 in the Systainer.

Here are the Festool data sheets for their oils. Maybe this will help you out a bit.

And here are the MSDS sheets, these may also be of interest. I don't think any of the Festool products are food safe.

Thanks for the links. I should have thought of those myself! I deal with MDS MSDS routinely so it is odd it didn't even cross my mind to check data sheets. Thanks again!

For what it's worth, I had a bad experience with their heavy duty outdoor oil and it's definitely not food safe from when I researched it but that was a few years ago.  I used it on the teak deck of my Chris Craft, I noticed it was milky looking with white waxy chunks of something in the oil when I was applying it but they did dissipate when I was buffing it in.  BUT it wouldn't cure and stayed sticky for months and was a real failure, I ended up removing it with oxalic acid and putting down my usual Daly's brand oil with no problems.  I suspect the Festool oil is a very slow selling product and sits on shelves for a long time causing their mix to possibly settle in the bottom of the container, or maybe I just got a bad batch of the oil, but it certainly wasn't a good experience for me.

Just exactly o\how far will one of these little .3l containers go. Is it absorbed readily or will it last awhile? I am trying to decide if I should buy a big container or just a couple of refills. I haven't used it yet since my wood hasn't been finished at the mill yet.

I was considering getting the kit then replacing the oil once it is empty with Osmo Polyx or something similar.

Does the Osmo give better results than the Festool suffix oil? Or is it shades and hints of colors that only a trained eye would see if they were side by side? I guess if someone is paying $thousands for a walnut table or a live edge slab you want the best results.

I am wondering the same thing. I am ver curious to the non Festool versions of the HD, one step, and Outdoor oils. Any suggestions? I am remodeling a kitchen and using all Cherry. HD was my oil of choice so I have a 5 liter container ordered. But as long as it lasts it won't last forever. I would hope Festool would give some recommendations of similar oils since they are discontinuing it. Sadly everything I ordered is on a backorder so I don't even know if I will get it. Paid for but in a month I expect to see a sorry we can no longer get this here's your credit.

Please verify/try before ordering larger quantities:

Per Leinos, an acquaintance inquired about substitutes/replacments:

Festool HD substitute: Leinos LF 283
Festool One Step substitute: Leinos LF 249

Not sure about Leinos availability outside Germany/EU/UK.

Kind regards,
Oliver

The information on the Leinos website shows that LF 283 is intended for use on kitchen worktops, children’s toys, etc. Which should clear up that question — HD appears to be food safe.

You need to keep in mind that "food safe" classification does not really exist in Europe.

We have a special category for  "can come in contact with food" which has a meaning of "food can be safely placed/prepared/stored in a container/plate/etc. oiled by it and this for an extended period". For a paint/oil to pass that mark, it must be either literally "edible" or sufficiently inert.

To be allowed to claim such a property you need special certification beyond what the Surfix self-declaration provides.
From what I read, this is a bit different from the US "food safe" category for coats/stains.

From the documentation the Surfix oils are in the "safe to place food on (temporarily)" but not in the "safe/certified to prepare/store food in" category.

[member=61254]mino[/member]  You’re absolutely right. Take note: do NOT eat wood treated with this oil : )

I emailed festoolusa and they gave me permission to post their reply so here you go. I will look into the oils mentioned above as well but I have a large order in so hopefully I will be set for a year or two before I need more. Fingers crossed. any way here is the reply.

"Hello,
Thank you for contacting Festool. It seems like the oil system will be discontinued in the near future due to low sales. At this time there is no official word as to when exactly the Surfix Oil will be discontinued in the North American Market. The Surfix Oil System is active at this time and components able to be purchased without problems. There is no exact date as to when that will change.

Best Regards,

I can hope sales of it pick way up here and they decide to keep it but I doubt that will happen. Might just go back to shellac flakes and everclear. I can get the good stuff here, not the watered down version some states make the places sell.

I am considering cancelling my order for surfeit and the accessories. In the end I'll have to find a replacement anyway. I can come up with a similar set up on my own. But I need a suitable replacement for the HD and onestep oils available in the states, anyone have any advice on what would work? The have really need to be food safe.

I emailed Osmo and asked for their recommendations for HD and Onestep replacements in their product line. they responded with Top Oil and PolyX Oil. I was told they are almost identical in their formulas Top Oil being certified by an outside source as food safe and Poly X also being food safe but they didn't take the expense to certify it. Just let it cure first. I asked if either would do it all and still be safe for food and bookshelves with old books because I would want a reaction with either and tables and cutting boards etc. Now to decide if I cancel my Festool order and move on now before I am more heavily invested in it.

Just an FYI some Surfix is coming in I finally got part of my orders shipped. after a bit of a backorder. Some of the foam pads are still back-ordered but some came in as well and the applicators in the tin box were back-ordered along with the gr vlies. The big jug and some refills and the part of my foam pad order did ship. I figure it has more to do with being locked down than not making the product still. I ordered a few extra little refills hoping that once empty I can clean them out and use them with a different oil, like the Osmo.
