I recently bought a used Graco 395 ultra to paint the exterior of my house next spring. I am hoping to paint some doors and wainscot this winter. I checked the spray tip recommendations on the SW pro classic that I will be using and it lists .017-.021 tips. I also have seen videos of professional painters that recommend using a 310 to 314 fine finish tips for interior trim.

Before I buy the smaller tips can someone tell me, is it ok to spray with that much smaller orifice size than what is recommended by the manufacturer?  Thanks for any help

In the Fine Finish line of tips Sherwin Williams recommends the 0.010-0.014 tips. A 310 tip is 6" fan, 0.010 office, a 314 tip is a 6" fan, 0.014 office.

The above is for Pro Classic Acrylic Alkyd interior, satin or semi gloss.

Thanks for the help guys. I just didn't get why they wouldn't list those sizes as acceptable for use.

Last question. Maybe.

I have a 5' whip hose on my HVLP. Is it advisable to have one for the airless set up also?

Makes the gun more comfortable.

Pro Classic sprays very nicely through a Fuji HVLP system.

Tom,

Thanks for the advice. I tried spraying the pro classic with my 4 stage Apollo but wasn't happy with the outcome. I tried thinning with water at 5% and then 10% but it still wouldn't atomize fine enough. Also affected the sheen. I used a 2.0 tip and experimented with the 1.8 also. I couldn't get it to atomize well with either set up.

Also tried it with my Bandit pressure pot but the paint would not flow thru the system. Tried max pressure (15psi) and watered down 5% but could not get paint to the gun.

[member=4105]tjbnwi[/member] Tom, I am considering a purchase of the Fuji hvlp, and I like SW products.  What system would you suggest if I plan on spraying the interior pro classic plus white for trim?

As always I appreciate your input.  Regards, Bill

I use a Q4, they now have a 5. I will be shooting PC in about a week. I'll try to (remember to) shoot a video of the application.

I use a 308 with my 395 with excellent results spraying cabinetry.  It's not as slick as my Kremlin but works pretty well. Make sure you have a small mesh filtering the gun or you will pull your hair out switching the tip cleaning clogs.

The Q5 turbine is nice, but for most applications the 4 stage is enough. The 5 stage you can turn down the motor and reduce pressure where as the 4 stage is done at the gun?  I think the difference in pressure is 8psi vs. 9.5 psi. The Fuji hvlp is on my wish list.

At the gun controls pressure by reducing flow so "technically" it isn't a pressure regulator.  One can use a $20 router motor speed control from Harbor Freight to vary the motor speed on a 4-stage brush motor with proper extension cords can get it close to your work.  The HF router motor speed control uses its back cover for a heat sink for its Triac and can get pretty hot but there is a mod for that which I've done.

I've had excellent results spraying ProClassics and SW Waterborne Alkyd Urethane with a 310 fine finish tip. If you try a .017 - .021 you'll have a case of runs.

Start at a low pressure and slowly increase the pressure until the tails disappear.
