What type of protection shall I apply on my MDF top that I had cnc'd with 20 mm holes to create my own mft?  I don't want it to swell if gotten wet or from the high humidity in my area.  Do mft owners put anything on theirs?

Thanks,
Rob

Hi Rob,

My new mobile bench (MDF top with a few 20 mm holes) has had Osmo oil. I had just enough left over from another job but cannot remember whether it was Top Oil or PolyX. The garbage has been emptied and so I cannot look to check which it was.

I first used Osmo on my MFT3 by accident after a spill. I then found that glue wipes off it pretty well and it is, of course, water proof.

Have a happy Christmas.

I have oiled mine too and can concur with peter on its affectiveness. Do both top bottom and sides as mdf will warp if it can absorb moisture on the untreated side
Kind Regards and seasons wishes

Thanks for the info.  What type of oil is that?  I need to find something like that here.

Thanks Peter.

I made this mft top to use with your Parf Dogs that I am hoping to get for Christmas!

I CNC'd my own super-sized MFT top.  I used a light application of "Butcher Block Top" finish, which is basically mineral oil and wax.  Quick wipe on and off.  Hardly changed the color of the MDF, and gave it just a slightly slick satin sheen.

I sprayed a coat of Zinssner(spel?) shellac on my custom MFT top. Easy to touch up spots with an aerosol can of Shellac and looks good.

Peter, I got them for Christmas!  Looks great.  Is it stainless?  Do I need to coat with something to prevent rusting as the weather is real humid here?

Rob

Hi Rob

The Veritas Parf Dogs are made from stainless steel and need no protection. The steel is jolly hard and will take a lot of abuse.
