For many years I have been using lacquer to finish Baltic Birch drawer boxes and always hated having to sand in between coats and constantly looking for runs or peeling. Today I decided to try Watco's Wipe on Poly and wow it looks great. You apply it with a lint free rag, no runs, no brush marks, no peeling, not to much smell, no dangerous fumes in the air and you don't need to sand between coats. After applying 2 coats I lightly sanded it with 600 grit paper and the finish is perfect. There is a very slight amber colour. Just enough to give it a rich looking finish.
I wish I would have found this years ago. I would have save a lot of time and money in buying good quality pure bristle brushes and lacquer thinner. Now many of you are probably spraying lacquer but I'm still doing things by hand. Thought I would share my experience.
Cheers,
JC

I too use only wipe on poly, however, the coats are very thin, so I put on 6 coats, lightly sanding after every second coat.  I usually finish up with Bri wax for a perfectly smooth finish.  Of course I am only a hobbyist, so my time isn't as important as those in business.  Bill

Building a case for my guitar.  When wiping on stain the cloth was catching on some fibres. I had sanded to a 220.  No sealer used.  Any thoughts?
