For those who do woodworking for pleasure

I quit playing chess in college because I realized that I could not engage in an inherently competitive hobby without obsessing. There was too much else of interest in the world, so I walked away.
Woodworking suits me better. Here's why:

[*]I'm more engineer that artist, but I can make something beautiful out of wood because the beauty is built into the wood. I just have to show it off.
[*]It is a creative outlet. I'm very conscious of developing my creative side when I'm making something.
[*]It's not competitive for me. I've entered a few local shows with modest expectations, but there is so much room for creativity that it's easy for me to just appreciate the other entries. Plus there is a certain camaraderie of woodworking process.

I do woodworking for pleasure. My day job is in a city office tower. I once realised that if I collected all of the work I have done over my 30 year career in IT, it would fit on a single USB.
In a newsagency once, looking at all of the various magazine titles and not seeing anything I wanted to buy, I realised that I did not have a hobby.
About four years ago I borrowed some tools to make a small shed. I reignited a high school hobby. I now have a somewhat creative activity where I am making something physical and can work to a precision of my choosing. It shuts everything else out of my mind for a few hours. It has little to do with anything else in my life. I am doing it just because I want to, not because I need to.
I am glad that the professional carpenters on FOG tollerate the amateurs. We arrive at using Festool for different reasons and share what is in common.
