Trying to find a complete range of Forstner bits by 1/16" s.  1/4" - 2 1/8"  in a quality brand. I currently have a 32pc set in a no name brand. They are OK. But I would like better bits.

So far I have looked at Famag, Fisch, Freud, CMT. None have all the 1/16" increments. Some have a few sizes.

Anyone know of other brands that might have them all?

Seth

I have Colt Maxcut in 1/16" increments but according to Infinity website they have been discontinued.

[member=1619]SRSemenza[/member] seth take a look at Colt. They don’t have a complete set in a box but they have the individual bits in the sizes you want in 1/16 increments up to 2 1/8

May have to find another model in 1/4

Yeah it doesn't have to be a set in a box as long as I can get all the sizes.

  Thanks,

  Thanks,

Nuts!  Looks like they are out of stock in most sizes. Probably for a while. Infinity Tools says they are discontinued. Quite a few places have them but only a few sizes.

Don't give up...they're worth the hunt.  [smile]  I have several sizes in both the older Colt 5-Star model made in Germany and the newer Colt Maxi-Cut made in France. Only the Zobo bits cut better, but then they should at 4x-5x the price.

The Famag's are the cutting equivalent of the Colt bits but they come in fewer sizes.

I really like the Famag Bormax bit but they only seem to come in 1/8 inch increments

Seth Lee Valley will get at least up to an inch and have others in sawtooth design. Hope this helps a little.

Do you, or anyone else, have experience with the Lee Valley bits?

They are priced like top quality bits and they are from Lee Valley so they are probably good. But it is hard to know from pictures and description. Especially since they have the wood box style of many cheapos.

Also, I am using the term Forstner as a generic for the general style / type / design of the bits. Saw tooth and wavy are fine with me.

A couple of more possibilities, one is CMT. Never tried their Forstners but I do like their router bits.

W. L. Fuller in R. I. makes Forstner bits in 1/16" increments. Most of their products are made in the USA, the Forstners are made in Austria.

Again, I've never tried the Fuller Forstner bits but I really do like their brad point bits and am slowly replacing my Colt Twinland brad point bits with the Fuller version.

Use them regularly Seth. I typically don't recommend something I don't have direct experience with it, my largest is 4". They cut smoothly and have very little runout if any, definitely a top bit even compared to the many euro forstners I have. They're also readily available from the 3 LV stores I have easy access to which is a definite plus when you need one fast.

News update...I've completely replaced the Colt Twinland brad point bits with Fuller brad point bits and that was a very worthwhile endeavor. They cut faster and they cut cooler...no more burned holes. They are not inexpensive, but I feel they are worth the price difference.

Remember, I've had to pay the price twice...once to purchase the Colts and become very dissatisfied with them and the 2nd time to purchase the Fuller items. Had I purchased the Fuller brad points on the first go-around my total cost would have been 30%-50% less.
