Forstner Bits

I just bought a set of Festool Imperial Forstner bits. They are incredibly sharp and perform much better than my Freud bits.

The bit has a projecting guide point. There is a replacement guide point and a drill bit in a plastic tube that came with the set. There is also some sort of a tool in the kit. It's a slender metal rod with a knurled end.

I've looked at the instruction sheet that came with the kit and I am still puzzled as to what the enclosed tool is for.

I am guessing from the instruction sheet drawing that the guide point can be forced out so one can replace it with a new guide point or the drill bit.

I'd appreciate an explanation.

To replace the tip.

Those look very nice...I didn't find them in the Catalog.  Where did you get them?

I bought both the metric and Imperial at Highland Woodworking. I've had the metrics set for a while and it did not have the neat case as did the Imperial set.

Yup Peter nailed it, the metal rod is used to press out the pilot for the Zobo bits.

One note to add -- All the Centrotec Installer Sets and Zobo (Forstner Style) Bit Sets are "Promotional" items, meaning Festool does not regularly stock them.  I believe the Installer Basic Set (M0701) is already out of stock on Festool's side.

I still have a decent supply left of all items should anybody need them.  Fortune favors the prepared ;D

A good friend of mine is a serious cabinet maker and he rarely seems to get excited about anything except these new Zobo bits from Festool. I had to go over to see him demonstrate his new found toys and they were very, very impressive. I know that they are not cheap but when time is money and quality counts then kit like this makes perfect sense. The removeable (replaceable) centre point and the resharpenable cutting faces seem to make these bits a long term investment.

Phil, I live in L.A. but I'm up in your area quite a bit (daughter and family live in Cupertino). I've actually been in your store several times.

My advice to anyone planning to visit K119 is to leave their wallet at home. You've got WAY too many tempting goodies stashed in there.  [smile]

LOL.. John + Gary... you guys are too much  [laughing]

I'll throw in one secret CIA secret (yup, DOUBLE secret) about K-119 --- Our showroom is tiny.  VERY tiny.  Our power comes from our, not one, not two, not three, but FOUR massive warehouses in the back!  I'm not kidding when I say, "try me" for stock  [cool]

And of course, courtesy of GoogleMaps, now ya'lls also know precisely where I sit and YouTube car videos all day.

I do like the idea of a "shop tour".  Stay tuned!  Will post it up in the dealer section as not to take away from this original thread on Forstner bits... lol
