Just out of interest and realizing this is a huge long shot, are any other FOGgers attending the Garrett Hack workshop in Vermont from August 6th to 8th? It is a 3 day hand tools event but I wonder if there will be any other Festool owners there?

I am really looking forward to it for so many reasons, amongst which is the opportunity to stop at my favourite Festool dealer near Burlington. I have been thinking about taking the plunge on an mft recently. Three days in the company of wood should be relaxing too, judging from the festool class reviews.

And three days without 'Er Indoors... [thumbs up]

Unless they've changed the specs recently, I don't think the MFT plunges.  [tongue]

Yeah, David, I imagine he'll soon say, "I have been thinking about taking a plunge into my mft recently."    [unsure]

I may have to enlarge the 20mm holes a little first and suck in the belly...

Nah.... better go straight for the hole saw.

Or, just pull that holy MDF top out from the frame.  Yeah, that's the ticket.    [big grin]

Wish I could go to the class.  I took a short course from Garret once.  He is a real class act.  Master woodworker and a great personality too.  Really interested that the students get what they want from the class.

Jesse,

That's good to hear.

From the few times that I have spoken to him, he seems to always be very generous with his time and willing to help and advise. It should be a fantastic course. I think there are 6 of us in all which should make for an excellent hands-on class.

Richard.

Hi Richard,

Chris Hudson - who attended Garrett's workshop with you...:>)

Remember I mentioned seeing the original MFT's on closeout? Well, it looks like the 1080's are gone - but the 800 is still available.

http://www.festoolusa.com/products/closeout.html

492651 MFT 800 $306.

Since you already have a great workbench, this might work better than a 1080 anyway. Add it to the end of your existing bench, shimming/shortening the 800 legs.

Before getting my 2nd 1080 for NY - I also thought about simply buying the long rails and a 1080/800 and making my own larger MFT.

Jerry Work describes doing this in a good article about MFTs- 'Getting the Most from the MFT..." The entire article is too large for me to attach it here - so I just extracted the first part that includes building the large MFT. Though the full article does not seem directly accessible on festoolusa.com - Google  'jerry work multifunction table' and you might still see it a few entries down.

Have fun!

Chris

Hi Chris,

[welcome] to the FOG!

What a fantastic weekend it was. I really took a lot away from the three days as well as enjoying every minute of it. I would definitely go again. It was also a pleasure to meet you, Garrett and the rest of the group. I hope we can stay in touch.

I am thinking about getting an MFT in the near future, and will look into the MFT 800. It is almost half the size however, which puts me off somewhat.

Speak soon
Richard.
