Haha you think? I think it's tacky as hell but fun none the less. I built the pedestal mount and plexi case. Really nothing fancy bit o laminate really basic poplar trim. Thing weighs a ton. I don't get to post stuff as I'm mostly under contract not to but this wasn't for a film it was for some night club so no contract.

I don't think I want to know what goes on in that night club  [eek]
 
The club isn't geared toward anyone in particular, it's a huge space with many different themed rooms. I did a large banquette section for one that had more of a 2001 Space Odyssey theme. I saw Motorhead  5 or 6 times at this place.
 
how did you get the clean edges on the acrylic? 

I have heard that some people flame the edges and it smooths them out.  I tried it using my kitchen stove with no luck.
 
It must be cool watching these movies and shows knowing that you built that set!

I am curious about the process and the dynamics of how it gets done.  About how many people are on site?  How much material gets reused?  Specifically with the last one, are you involved in the "lets make this look old?" 

An old boss of mine used to say that the best carpenters he knew were set builders... speed and quality

 
On a large feature such as Total Recall, we can have around 200 people, both scenic artists and Carpenters. Scenics do all of the aging whit paints and textures. Their backgrounds can be in fine arts or furniture restoration and fine finishing.
A set carpenter is a broad mix of talents and there are definitely some brilliant Carpenters in this local, to say they're the best out there though is a bit of a stretch. Our trade is unique in that we're almost making giant functional sculptures and that can be challenging. But there is some outstanding talent even just on this forum that I have to scratch my head at just figuring out how you lot pull it off.

As for reuse of materials, film is not good with this, in fact we're huge wasters. But anything you feel is reusable for your own projects you're pretty much free to take it........ There's just a lot.
Period, sci/fi, horror and the like are my favourite types of films to work on as the builds are so dramatic and interesting.

The show I'm on now is about lawyers...

Hopefully get on robocop over the winter though

Thanks! Another show to watch! When I read your post I went to check my tv schedule to see if it was on and it was so I programmed it into my PVR. Then I got sucked into 30 minutes of awful Dr. Phil.

I have NOTHING to do with Dr. Phil. If you do watch the show, tell me what you think. I've seen episode one and liked it but I'm biased I suppose. Was just really fun seeing what you built on screen as often it looks quite different. This is a very stylized series and has a look typical of BBC productions. There is one exterior location shot in episode one the rest was built in one studio, a few city blocks worth of Five Points New York. I wish I could post pics of the builds but thats a no no.
 
You have to have one of the coolest jobs out there!  It would be cool if you had some pics of some of your builds...not sure if you can share those or not.

I can't share build pics. This industry has it's positives and negatives like any other, I do have fun though

There is a write up on the series in the The Toronto Star today. Along with the article is a video of the set which looks massive.
Some impressive work.

Hey cool! ya I'm directly responsible for the Police station facade and detail works on "5th ave" which you get a glimpse of in the video. I also did a lot of interior finishing in one of the main mansions and a few facades of some rather large but less important buildings. There really is an almost hyper real look to the series because of it all being shot in a sound stage. I like the look of it but as i said I'm biased  [big grin] Hope you guys get to check it out
