Just noticed that Fine-tools.com has got Guido build a Benchcrafted Roubo workbench for them and they published the build instructions in German (thou they mention that an English translation is in the works).

Now there is an english version of the Roubo-Style Workbench Video:

Hope you all enjoy it and can understand my german accent ;-)

The PDF-Plan to build this workbench will also be translated into an english version, think this will be finished in a few days. You will find it here: http://www.fine-tools.com/roubo-hobelbank.html

Guido,

That is great...thank you very much.  Looks like the perfect workbench.

Just curious -- who makes the clamps shown at 4:40 (Veritas?), and the plane shown at 8:40?

The clamp at 4:40 is from Bessey, the following clamps are all from Veritas except the holdfast with spindle I also use in the deadman is from Sjöbergs.

The short shoulder plane is from Rali and is called "Rali Pocket Rabbet Plane G03 (Bullnose)". Here you can find some details: https://www.fine-tools.com/hobel1.htm

Hi Guido

Thanks for all the work you put into this set of drawings and the videos.  I'm sure it required an enormous amount of time.

I want to build a proper woodworking bench and the availability of your plans and videos have eased  my decision about which style of bench to build.

You make the whole process look easy. I know it will take a lot longer when I build mine.

Nicely done like all your projects.  Have you shared this with Jameel from Benchcrafted?

Neil

Great bench and video! Guido, in all of your videos, I've always noticed the way that you move your hands with deliberateness and consciousness...like a well-trained musician. This is something that I aspire to do each day. Thanks for posting.

Thank you Guido! I learn so much from your videos and truly appreciate all of the time that you put in to share your work. After watching your videos I always seem to find myself thinking a bit differently about workflow and process.

Like NYC Tiny Shop said, I also aspire to one day work with the skill you demonstrate. Thanks again for sharing these.

Thanks to all of you for your compliments, it's good to hear that you like it.
I should not forget to mention that all this were only possible because the german shop "Fine Tools" in Berlin has ordered two!!! Roubo-Benches and sponsored the plans and videos.
Dieter Schmid the owner of the shop has also a lot of english speaking customers and so he ask Brian Anderson to translate my german version of the plan/video and he did a really great job!!!
By the way: Normally I don't have any problems with giving a completed workpiece to my customers, but this time I have thought about to keep one of the benches myself ;-)
The benchcrafted hardware is so beautiful made and works so smooth and easy - really amazing!

@Neil: I don't know whether Fine-Tools has told Benchcrafted about this, but if you like tell Jameel.
@Tim: Yes sleeping on the bench was a funny idea, but when I was young we have an older employee in the firm of my grandfather who sleeps on the bench after lunch for half an hour. In a german woodworking forum someone wonder where he can store the bedding and I told him that Festool has developed a special systainer for that and will show it exclusively on the next woodworking fair ;-)

Good luck to all who wants to built the bench and best regards

Guido

Hi Guido,

Your Roubo guide is truly excellent! I am currently about to start the same Roubo bench. I have purchased all the bench craft hardware and am doing my planning before I cut wood. I noticed with interest your use of the Festool OF1400 with two fences for added stability when routing the deep mortises. For this you seem to use longer guide rods in order to cope with the width of the stock. This looks like a very good solution to me and I have been trying to find these longer rods as a Festool accessory but so far failed! Are these Festool? If not, can you let me know what you used, what the diameter and length are?

Thank you and well done!

Regards,

Paul

Hi Paul,

I have used two longer guide rods from a bosch circle jig. The diameter is 8 mm and the lenght is 800 mm here is a link from a german shop:  http://www.conrad.de/ce/de/product/512327/Fuehrungsstange-fuer-Bosch-Oberfraesen-8-x-800-mm-Bosch-2609200144-Durchmesser-8-mm

But you can also use a normal 8 mm steel or aluminum rod. Also a 8 mm threaded rod works fine, there you can easily mount a self made parallel guide with some nuts.
Proile rods in 8 mm dia. for furniture locking systems works also very fine, because the are not totally round, but have a small flat area which is perfect for clamping by the screw-end of the parallel guide locking screw. Here is a link to the product at Haefele (think this is the US Website): http://easylink.hafele.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/HDE-INT-EasyLink_HDE-INT-Site/en_EN/-/EUR/Haefele_ViewOfferDetail-StartSavePageable?CatalogCategoryID=p_jAqBlZDXAAAAEv01FJ5Jts&ProductUUID=CsPAqBlZPW0AAAEvqZJJ5JvO&OrigProductUUID=PnrAqBlZdWcAAAE7zRAuII4.&SingleObjectPageableID=xKHAqBlO2SIAAAFE9NkFMPLQ&OrigArticleContext=Haefele_ViewOfferDetail-RestorePaging&OrigArticlePageableID=xKHAqBlO2SIAAAFE9NkFMPLQ&OrigArticlePageSize=&OrigArticlePageNumber=&OrigProductContext=&OrigProductPageableID=&OrigProductPageSize=&OrigProductPageNumber=&GlobalIndex=4&LinkOrigin=ArticleListProduct

Hope this will help you …

Regards

Guido

Does anyone know if using 4/4 instead of 8/4 maple is alright? I have lots of 4/4 maple so I wouldn't have to purchase any wood for this project. I don't want to make a mistake on this big of a project. Any ideas?

Guido, what brand is the drill press...I love that you can change the position of the drill forward.
