A long time client asked me to make some gates, so after a design brief I drew them up and submitted my design.
" They need to be more substantial, I feel." was his earnest comment.
So I re-worked it (thank all deity's for the benefits of CAD) [big grin]
So we beefed up the stiles to 125x75 (5"x3") Bottom and Middle Rails the same and the Top Rail and Brace to 100x75 (4"x3") and re-spaced the "spears" to suit.
They are 1675mm tall (67") and 2332mm (93 1/4") wide.
The "spears" are continuous and bonded into the bottom rail. Joints are through mortice and tenons draw bored and pegged and wedged. Brace is stub tenoned into stiles and rails.
I have also finally got myself a Rotex and used it for the first time to finish this project  [big grin]

Assembled the last one this morning, it took me 3 1/2 hours to glue up and install the metal work.
Using the square drive socket from my 3/8" Veritas dowell maker and the T15, I found I could lock onto the spear points and kind of drill the shafts down through the
pre-drilled holes, the metal is a nominal 12mm dia but is not ground to size and they are not without bends and small kinks: even with having drilled the holes over size on the brace and middle rail it was still hard going. Thankfully my brother in law had welded the points on well, even with me assisting ;D

Hope to get pics when installed too. Thanks for looking in.

Rob.

They look wonderful - where did you get the wood? What hinges will you use?

Awesome looking gate!  I hope you have some pics of the completed project.  Love the pinned mortises.

Brett, Brett.  You just keep sticking your chin out  [tongue]

Good to see more of your work Rob, as always a couple of questions.  The spears, what will they be getting finished with or is there something on them before assembly ?  Can the spear points be bought or did he make them ?

Seen a few gates n stuff on FOG with metal "spindles" & I'm really digging that look.  I last worked with Iroko about 15 years ago & said then i would never work with it again !  It was as hard as hell with horrible unpredictable grain.  was yours nicer to work with ?

Gate looks stunning, just not sure about the shape of the top of the stiles !  Look forward to some completed pictures of them hanging with a finnish on them.

Thanks for sharing, again  [big grin]

Really nice looking gates.love the mix of wood and steel. I bet there a tidy weight. What finish are you going to use on them?

Okay:
Alfa; they will be hung on an electric opening system by others.
Dean; I made a jig to drill the angled holes, then drilled from both sides to make sure they lined up..I got within a mm of it.
Brett; Your just setting yourself up for a slagging when you say stuff like that to Dean...but I like the sentiment ;D
Alan; I bought them in, they are cast iron. The metal will get painted and the wood oiled by the client. The iroko as always is a pain to work with, what with tear out and the dust, the rotex and ctl  reduced the latter. Had to cut the brace tenons by hand with a jap saw and clean up with my large shoulder plane (Veritas)
Yeti; Yep! They are a fearsome weight, especially when your working alone.

By the way I only used two sheets of Rubin on the rotex to finish sand both gates with none of the clogging of the grit that one usually gets.

Yea.....I'll go dig a hole in the garden and jump in......LOL JMB

Brilliant work.

I love good metalwork and it pains me walking around Exeter and London and seeing where all the beautiful metalwork was cut from buildings to make bombs and bullets to fight the germans in ww2. Think they even took bells form churches!!!

Cheers Wooden Lungs  [smile]
